This unit standard covers knowledge of the types and
installation requirements of electrical switchboards, and is
intended for electricians and related trades.
People credited with this unit standard are able to:
– demonstrate knowledge of types of electrical switchboards;
– demonstrate knowledge of installation requirements for
electrical switchboards; and
– describe test procedures for main switchboards.

This unit standard has been developed for learning and assessment off-job.

AS/NZS 3000:2007, Electrical installations (known as the Australian/New Zealand
Wiring Rules), including Amendment 1;
and all subsequent amendments and replacements.

The term current regulations and standards is used in this unit standard to refer to
the requirements of the above references.

Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of types of electrical switchboards.
Evidence requirements
1.1
The terms switchboard, main switchboard, multiple earth neutral switchboard
(MEN switchboard), distribution board, and switchgear are explained in
accordance with current regulations and standards.

Layout and circuit wiring diagrams for different types of switchboards are
explained in accordance with current regulations and standards.

Demonstrate knowledge of installation requirements for electrical switchboards.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Requirements regarding the construction of switchboards are described
according to current regulations and standards.
Range
2.2
general construction, bars (busbars) and links, control and
metering equipment, equipment identification, wiring, access to
live parts, fire protective measures.
Requirements regarding location and accessibility of switchboards are
described in accordance with current regulations and standards.
Range
2.3
general positioning, identification of main switchboard, restricted
locations, and access requirements.
Requirements for installation of residual current devices (RCD) are described in
accordance with current regulations and standards.
Outcome 3
Describe test procedures for main switchboards.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Description includes visual checks for switchboards in accordance with current
regulations and standards.
3.2
Description includes electrical tests in accordance with current regulations and
standards.
