Industry track standards are those specified by the Department of Conservation, or regional park authority. 2 This unit standard is for people who are employed to maintain and/or erect simple building structures on public lands and/conservation estates operated by the Department of Conservation or a regional authority. People in this role would be working under supervision. 3 Legislation, regulations, and codes to be complied with in this unit standard include but are not limited to the Antiquities Act 1975, Building Act 1991, the Building Code, Building Regulations 1992, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Historic Places Act 1993, Resource Management Act 1991, and New Zealand Standard 8630:2004(SNZHB) Tracks and outdoor visitor structures. Range: 1.3 Wood types and sizes are recognised and identified. Range: 1.4 may include but is not limited to – metric sizes, imperial sizes, dressed timber, tanilised grade, wood types (pine, macrocarpa, Douglas fir). Basic building structure and walkway structure features are clearly identified and plans and specifications are interpreted correctly. Range: 1.5 a minimum of three hand tools and two power tools. may include but is not limited to – foundations, floor, walls, roof structure and rail structure. Appropriate wood type is selected for building tasks. Range: tanilised, non-tanilised, ground treated, above ground treated. element 2 Assist with building and repair work to single room structure and/or basic structure in a remote area. Range: basic structure may include but is not limited to – open shelter, stand alone sink bench, ‘track intentions book’ stand. performance criteria 2.1 Foundation profiles are erected for a one-room structure or a basic structure at a specific site in accordance with plans and specifications. 2.2 Assistance is provided for laying a building foundation and/or piles for a remote structure at a specified site. 2.3 A portable generator is operated at a remote building site. Range: may include but is not limited to – repair of a wall cladding, window, door, roof, gutter; general internal repair; structural repair. element 3 Plan to erect, and erect a boardwalk structure under supervision in a remote area using industry track service standards and recommendations. performance criteria 3.1 Construction process for erecting the boardwalk structure is planned with consideration for economic/budget factors, industry specifications and recommendations, aesthetical value and suitable route direction. 3.2 Appropriate designs or plans and specifications are used to determine building requirements for boardwalk construction. 3.3 Appropriate building materials are selected for a boardwalk structure. Range: 3.4 Timber is measured and cut to the given specifications of a specified boardwalk under the direction of the supervisor. Range: 3.5 durability, strength, suitability, safety, economics/budget. prefab cutting, measuring, cutting method, selection of timber for the task. Boardwalk is built to required specifications under the direction of the supervisor.
