People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare
for maintenance work and/or building work on a remote site;
assist with building and repair work to single room structure
and/or basic structure in a remote area; plan to erect, and
erect, a boardwalk structure under supervision in a remote
area using industry track service standards and
recommendations; and prepare site for public use.
entry information:
Prerequisites: Unit 6916, Demonstrate knowledge of the
Code of Practice relating to chainsaw use; and Unit 6917,
Operate a chainsaw; or demonstrate equivalent knowledge
and skills.
Recommended: Unit 13002, Demonstrate knowledge of
timber used in construction.
accreditation option:
Evaluation of documentation and visit by NZQA and industry.
moderation option:
A centrally established and directed national moderation
system has been set up by The Skills Organisation.

Definitions
Remote conservation site is a building site located on
land that is under the management of the Department
of Conservation or a regional authority or a statutory
conservation covenanting body such as the Queen
Elizabeth II National Open Space Trust, and that is
without mains power.

Approved safety plan is a plan approved by the
employing organisation (eg Department of
Conservation or relevant regional authority) and that
meets OSH requirements.
Industry track standards are those specified by the
Department of Conservation, or regional park authority.

This unit standard is for people who are employed to
maintain and/or erect simple building structures on
public lands and/conservation estates operated by the
Department of Conservation or a regional authority.
People in this role would be working under supervision.

Legislation, regulations, and codes to be complied with
in this unit standard include but are not limited to the
Antiquities Act 1975, Building Act 1991, the Building
Code, Building Regulations 1992, Health and Safety in
Employment Act 1992, Historic Places Act 1993,
Resource Management Act 1991, and New Zealand
Standard 8630:2004(SNZHB) Tracks and outdoor
visitor structures.

Demonstrate knowledge of an approved safety plan to ensure safe operating
procedures are followed while working on a remote building site.
Range:
personal safety, use of personal protective equipment, site safety,
hazard identification, environmental conditions, weather
conditions.

Hand and power tools are selected, maintained and prepared in accordance
with manufacturer’s operating instructions for specific building tasks in a remote
area.

Wood types and sizes are recognised and identified.

dressed timber, tanilised grade, wood types (pine, macrocarpa,

a specific site in accordance with plans and specifications.

Assistance is provided for laying a building foundation and/or piles for a remote
structure at a specified site.
2.3
A portable generator is operated at a remote building site.

2.4
Structural damage and product failure is identified and material requirements
are evaluated and recorded.
2.5
Appropriate materials are selected for the required repairs to damaged or failed
structure.
2.6
General building and repairs are carried out under the guidance of the
supervisor.

may include but is not limited to – repair of a wall cladding,
window, door, roof, gutter; general internal repair; structural repair.

Plan to erect, and erect a boardwalk structure under supervision in a remote area using
industry track service standards and recommendations.

3.1
Construction process for erecting the boardwalk structure is planned with
consideration for economic/budget factors, industry specifications and
recommendations, aesthetical value and suitable route direction.
3.2
Appropriate designs or plans and specifications are used to determine building
requirements for boardwalk construction.
3.3
Appropriate building materials are selected for a boardwalk structure.

Timber is measured and cut to the given specifications of a specified boardwalk
under the direction of the supervisor.
Range:

Prepare site for public use.
performance criteria
4.1
Site is tidied, and debris, surplus material and equipment are removed.
4.2
Site is left in a state that meets public safety standards and protects the
environment.
4.3
The process by which the landholding body obtains approval for the structure to
be used by the public is described in accordance with organisational policies
and procedures.
