Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are, in an aviation
workplace, able to: set up, check, and operate explosive trace
detection (ETD) equipment; conduct ETD sampling process;
and record ETD analysis information for evidential purposes.

Explanatory note
Reference to enterprise procedures means that all activities must comply with the
requirements contained in the current airport exposition, current airport company manuals
and procedures, where applicable, and any relevant legislative and/or regulatory
requirements, which may include but are not limited to: Civil Aviation Act 1990, relevant
Civil Aviation Rules, Aviation Crimes Act 1972, Aviation Security Service Policies and
Procedures, New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) Policy.

Set up, check, and operate explosive trace detection (ETD) equipment in an aviation
workplace.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Procedures for setting up ETD equipment in an aviation workplace are followed
in accordance with enterprise procedures.
1.2
ETD equipment calibration is performed at set up and during operations in
accordance with enterprise procedures.
1.3
ETD equipment is operated in accordance with enterprise procedures.
1.4
Occupational health and safety procedures are followed when setting up and
operating the ETD equipment in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Conduct ETD sampling process in an aviation workplace.

Evidence requirements
2.1
Selected persons or articles are screened using approved ETD equipment, in
accordance with legislative requirements and enterprise procedures.
articles may include but are not limited to – bags, cabin baggage,
checked baggage, goods, hold baggage, packages, personal
effects, work equipment, tools of trade, display/promotional items,
vehicles/machinery.

2.2
The sample is tested using ETD equipment in accordance with legislative
requirements and enterprise procedures.
2.3
Positive and negative results are recognised in accordance with enterprise
procedures.
2.4
Action is taken in response to a positive result in accordance with legislative
requirements and enterprise procedures.
Outcome 3
Record ETD analysis information for evidential purposes in an aviation workplace.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Equipment checks and calibration results are recorded and reported in
accordance with enterprise procedures.
3.2
Calibrations and alarms are saved in accordance with enterprise procedures.
3.3
Records of sampling processes, positive and negative results and consequent
actions are completed and reported in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
