This unit standard is for experienced people working in the area
of kitchen or bathroom design and planning.
People credited with this unit standard are able to analyse:
flooring material requirements; surface material requirements;
wall surface material requirements; and cabinet construction
and hardware requirements, to develop kitchen or bathroom
designs; and apply surface material and hardware
requirements to developed kitchen or bathroom designs.

Definitions
Worksite requirements – refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which
are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace.
These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and
procedures, work instructions, manufacturer’s specifications, product quality
specifications, legislative requirements.
Client – refers to the person who has commissioned the design brief.
Kitchen or bathroom design brief – refers to the design parameters agreed between
the kitchen or bathroom designer and the client.

Evidence is required of a minimum of two different kitchen or bathroom designs.

Outcome 1
Analyse flooring material requirements to develop kitchen or bathroom designs.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Flooring materials used in the kitchen or bathroom are analysed in terms of their
function, sustainability, client requirements, and any legislative requirements.
Range
requirements may include but are not limited to – hardwearing,
long lasting, water resistant, easy to clean, sound transfer.
1.2
Flooring material finishes are analysed in terms of their impact on the kitchen or
bathroom design.
1.3
Flooring materials options are incorporated into the kitchen or bathroom design
in accordance with the kitchen or bathroom design brief.
Range
flooring materials may include but are not limited to – timber, cork,
natural stone, terracotta, ceramic tiles, concrete, linoleum, vinyl.
Outcome 2
Analyse surface material requirements to develop kitchen or bathroom designs.
Range
surface materials may include but are not limited to – benchtops, cabinets.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Surface materials used in the kitchen or bathroom are analysed in terms of their
function, sustainability, client requirements, and any legislative requirements.
Range
requirements include but are not limited to – heat resistant, stain
resistant, easy to clean, non-porous, shock absorbent;
surface materials may include but are not limited to – low pressure
laminates, high pressure laminates, lacquer, glass overlays, paint
finish, stainless steel, solid timber, veneer.
2.2
Surface material finishes are analysed in terms of their impact on the kitchen or
bathroom design.

Surface material options are incorporated into the kitchen or bathroom design in
accordance with the kitchen or bathroom design brief.
Range
surface material options may include but are not limited to –
timber, stainless steel, natural stone, engineered stone, laminate,
acrylics, glass, low pressure laminates, high pressure laminates,
lacquer, glass overlays, paint finish, stainless steel, solid timber,
veneer.

their function, sustainability, client requirements, and any legislative
requirements.
Range

laminates, glass, tiles, stainless steel, paint, srubbable wallpaper,
timber panelling, engineered stone, natural stone.

Wall surface finishes are analysed in terms of their impact on the kitchen or
bathroom design.

Wall surface material options are incorporated into the kitchen or bathroom
design in accordance with the kitchen or bathroom design brief.

wall surface materials may include but are not limited to –

Types of cabinet construction used in the kitchen or bathroom are analysed in
terms of their function, sustainability, client requirements, and any legislative
requirements.

4.2
Cabinet hardware requirements are analysed in terms of their impact on the
kitchen or bathroom design.
Range
4.3
cabinets may include but are not limited to – modular, custom
built, overlay, face frame system.
cabinet hardware includes but is not limited to – hinges, drawer
runners, handles, interior mechanical fittings.
Cabinet finishes are analysed in terms of their impact on the kitchen or
