KITCHEN AND BATHROOM DESIGN
Catalog Description:
62 - Kitchen and Bathroom Design
3 units
Survey of the field of kitchen and bathroom designs. Includes resources, materials, trends, costs and
needs, both functional and aesthetic. Strongly recommended: Interior Design 10. 2 hours lecture, 3
hours laboratory.
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:

understand the human factors in designing functional and aesthetic kitchens and bathrooms;
understand current technology and trends in kitchen and bathroom design;
become familiar with the materials, fixturing and business practices in this field;
understand ways to preplan the realignment of fixtures and update kitchens and bathrooms;
understand the roles and responsibilities of designers, contractors and suppliers;
draw accurate floor plans and specify materials and estimate cost of materials and installations;
plan functional storage areas.
Course Content:
1. Study floor plans and elevations of kitchen and bathrooms to determine how they fulfill the
functional needs of individuals and take into consideration the human factors of space design
2. Prepare floor plans using standard dimensions of fixtures and components on the market
3. Survey materials used in kitchen and bathroom design including, ceramic tile, marble, corian,
fiberglass and plastic substances
4. Compare American and European styling and materials used in kitchens and bathrooms
5. Prepare a resource file of materials, fixtures, cabinetry, designers and support services
6. Information regarding the National Kitchen and Bath Association and the Society of Certified
Kitchen Designers
7. Estimating, drafting, presentation, and Title 24 requirements

Assigned projects; reading assignments; tests; final examination
