Common widths are, 19mm, 23.8mm, 32mm, 50mm. This unit standard is not applicable to making 'forge steel knives' or knives from 'rule steel'. Range: 1.5 clean cut, required angle, economical use of steel, exhaustive use of short pieces. Work practices meet company safety requirements. element 2 Fit stay to knife and trim surplus knife steel. performance criteria 2.1 Knife is secured on magnetised table according to company practice. 2.2 Height block is positioned according to identified stay position. 2.3 Stay is positioned to knife and checked to company tolerance. 2.4 Rejected stays are reground to match company tolerance. 2.5 Surplus knife steel is trimmed in accordance with company practice. Range: height, well secured, flat, no overheating of blade steel. 2.7 Knives are checked against patterns to company tolerance. 2.8 Rejected knives are modified and/or returned to previous operator according to company practice to match pattern to company tolerances. 2.9 Work practices meet company safety requirements. element 3 Weld up knives. performance criteria 3.1 Welding equipment is set up to match knife type and according to company practice. Range: 3.2 Knives are positioned and secured on welding table according to company practice. Range: 3.3 spray, dip solution. Stays are welded in accordance with company practice. Range: 3.5 table clean, flat to table, well secured. Anti slag solution is applied in accordance with company practice. Range: 3.4 weld time, wire speed, voltage, gas pressure. neat, secure, no overheating, weld penetration. Knife steel is welded in accordance with company practice. Range: neat, secure, not on knife edge bevel, no overheating, weld penetration.
