People credited with this unit standard are able to: select
stay position on knife and cut stay steel; fit stay to knife and
trim surplus knife steel; weld up knives; and complete
documentation.
entry information:
Recommended: Unit 2670, Avoid welding hazards with safe
work practices and Unit 2672, Weld steel up to 6mm thick
with the gas metal arc welding process, or demonstrate
equivalent knowledge and skills.
accreditation option:
Evaluation of documentation and visit by NZQA and industry.
moderation option:
A centrally established and directed national moderation
system has been set up by Competenz.

Company safety requirements must conform to the
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, the Health
and Safety in Employment Regulations 1995, and their
subsequent amendments.

This unit standard refers exclusively to making knives
using various widths and thicknesses of 'pre-sharpened
cold bend knife blade steel' (knife steel). Common
widths are, 19mm, 23.8mm, 32mm, 50mm. This unit
standard is not applicable to making 'forge steel knives'
or knives from 'rule steel'.

Stay steel is selected in accordance with knife type, order specification and/or
company requirement.

Height block is selected according to company practice and/or order
specification.

Stay position is identified and stay steel marked according to company practice
and/or order specification.

Stay steel is cut and ground to marks in accordance with company practice.

Fit stay to knife and trim surplus knife steel.

Knife is secured on magnetised table according to company practice.
2.2
Height block is positioned according to identified stay position.
2.3
Stay is positioned to knife and checked to company tolerance.
2.4
Rejected stays are reground to match company tolerance.
2.5
Surplus knife steel is trimmed in accordance with company practice.
