This unit standard is designed to enable entry level people to perform basic process operations in a wiredrawing operation. Performance criteria 1.1 Wiredrawing machine components are identified using enterprise equipment. Range 1.2 Post wiredrawing and ancillary equipment are identified using enterprise equipment. Range 1.3 equipment may include – pointer, tagger, welder, lubrication system, packaging, measurement system. The wiredrawing process is described in terms of the principal purpose of the equipment on the line, and the sequence of operation, using enterprise equipment. Range 1.4 components may include – controls, safety features, pay-off, diebox, capstan, internal cooling system, annealer, tinner, accumulator, spooler, main drive. equipment may include – pay-off, diebox, capstan, annealer, tinner, accumulator, spooler, main drive, control unit, lubrication system. Machine services are identified using enterprise equipment, and their purpose and controls are described. Range machine services may include – power, water, compressed air, vacuum, steam, nitrogen. Element 2 Perform wiredrawing operations. Performance criteria 2.1 The hazards associated with wiredrawing and their sources are identified, and precautions are taken in accordance with enterprise procedure. Range 2.2 hazards include – noise, eye damage, lifting, burns, skin irritation, occupational overuse syndrome; sources include – slippery floors. Emergency stopping of the wiredrawing line and ancillary equipment is demonstrated in accordance with enterprise procedure. Range evidence may be simulated if required. Range 2.5 post wiredrawing operations may include – product removal, product inspection, product testing, product packaging. Production recording is carried out in accordance with enterprise procedure. Element 3 Start up and shut down a wiredrawing line and associated equipment that have been preset. Performance criteria 3.1 Raw material for wiredrawing is verified against job specification and loaded in accordance with enterprise procedure. 3.2 Work area is cleared and cleaned to ensure safe operating conditions in accordance with enterprise requirements. Range work area may include – floors, stairs, platforms, machine surfaces, ledges, intake and output areas, hand tools. 3.3 Wiredrawing machinery, ancillary equipment, and downstream equipment startup is performed in accordance with enterprise procedure. 3.4 Wiredrawing machinery, ancillary equipment, and downstream equipment shutdown is performed in accordance with enterprise procedure. Please note Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
