Migration from Millennium to Sierra
Peralta Community College District (PCCD) Libraries
History of library automation in the Peralta Community College District





PCCD librarians have been meeting regularly since the 1970s
Automation was delayed to ensure that all PCCD libraries were included in the
district-wide system
Shared, district-wide system best meets the needs of PCCD students
PCCD Libraries first automated in 1998 (Horizon system)
PCCD Libraries migrated to Millennium (Innovative Interfaces, inc. or III) in spring
2011
Why the need is urgent





III released Sierra in late 2011
PCCD is rapidly falling behind the curve
A majority of Millennium libraries have now migrated from Millennium
PCCD Libraries need a mobile-friendly interface for students
PCCD 5-year contract with Millennium expires in March 31, 2016
Flexibility to Explore New Possibilities
There are several options for the District when it comes to this migration. Among the
choices to make are:
Hosted – PCCD has the option of a hosted contract, wherein Innovative Interfaces handles
system maintenance and upgrades
Discovery platform – Increasingly the standard search interface used by California community
colleges, a discovery platform is an “add-on” interface that improves student search success.
Innovative Interfaces uses EBSCO Discovery Services, considered by many to be the premier
discovery platform.
Decision Center – A performance and collection management tool provides essential data for
assessment purposes.
Electronic Resource Management (ERM) – An organizational tool used to manage the
growing number of electronic resources. Without this kind of tool, the PCCD libraries have
limited options for developing and expanding access to electronic resources.
Mobile Apps for Students and Library Staff – A mobile-friendly interface to the library catalog
is essential for students. Additionally the library is seeking a mobile-friendly worklist app that
will allow staff to use portable devices to view and manage library collections. Importantly the
staff app would also allow staff to bring the online catalog and reference assistance to the
stacks, providing new for library service
Cost Estimates
In 2014-2015, PCCD librarians researched the costs of migration.
