Request for Hire-African American Studies
Date: October 31, 2010
Request for New Faculty Position:
African American Studies
Criteria 1: Percent of Full-Time Faculty in Afram
For F10, 59% taught by ONE full time faculty. 41% taught by adjunct. This number is
skewed because contract instructor is teaching significant extra service this current
semester. If teaching full time load only, as has previously been the case, then the ratio
would be 41% contract and 59% adjunct.
Criteria 2: Semester End Enrollment Patterns
F08 Retention 76% Success 61%
F09 Retention 90% Success 59%

Criteria 5: Position Authorization
FT positions have been authorized in the budget for Merritt College.
Criteria 6: Enhancing Existing Programs
African American Studies at Merritt College is a historically significant and noted
department in that it is the first of its kind in the nation and is cited in numerous scholarly
accounts of the Black Studies Movement. Over the past 6 years efforts have been
underway to reestablish high student enrollment, dynamic programming, study abroad
and the acquisition of an Africana Studies Research Center. To date the growth of the
department has superseded the ability of one FT faculty and the FTES has climbed to one
of the highest on campus even before the budget crisis.
