Geology is an important subject to offer in an earthquake fault zone. It helps the Bay Area community
become informed about the processes of plate tectonics. Geology is offered in the evening when
dayworking people can come in the evening. FTES Data show the course is increasingly productive.
Geology meets the general science education requirements for both the AA degree and transfer to fouryear higher learning institutions. The geology course also meet the undergraduate requirements for a
Bachelor’s degree in Geology 10 with a California Articulation (CAN) number.
The curriculum is current and effective. Curriculum Review and Unit plans were updated in 2009. Earth
Science courses are contemporary topics in today’s global education especially with the diversity of
students at Laney College. Geology educates Bay Area residents about earthquakes and the urban
context in which they occur. Exposure to Geology may introduce students to other Earth Science
courses.
