Qualitative Assessments CTE and Vocational: Community and labor market relevance. Present evidence of community need based on Advisory Committee input, industry need data, McIntyre Environmental Scan, McKinsey Economic Report, licensure and job placement rates, etc. Transfer and Basic Skills: Describe how your course offerings address transfer, basic skills, and program completion. Geography is the academic/intellectual underpinnings of the Green Job programs -Why 'Going Green' is necessary. Physical Geography teaches basis of climate change and sustainability that future practioners of Green Technology need to learn to succeed. Geography is a science-based course offered in the Humanities Division and taken to fulfill a requirement in the AA degree program. Many non-science majors who have a fear of science take this course, and go on to transfer to a 4year school. Many ESL students are also enrolled in class and Geography allows them to pass a science course in a language not native to them. Our goal is to increase enrollment by having a stable department offering several key courses, and late-starting classes. In addition, interdisciplinary courses between Earth Sciences and Geography are planned to offer two global climate change courses. Since climate change is affecting our everyday lives, this will be an important offering to help people understand the complexity of the topic. Page 3 of 7 VI. Strategic Planning Goals Check all that apply. Describe how goal applies to your program. Advance Student Access, Success & Equity Engage our Communities & Partners Build Programs of Distinction Create a Culture of Innovation & Collaboration Develop Resources to Advance & Sustain Mission Operating several pedegogical approaches; lectures, writing, multiple-choice tests, projects, extra credit engagement, allows all students access to material and potential success. Promoting sustainability and community-service learning opportunites build's better Oakland communties. FTES enrollment shows our success in creating a culture that attracts and retains students. To aid retention and enhance success, the Geosystems textbook has been scanned into the Kurzweil reading computer system, which provides the book presented as speech on a computer, and taping lectures which are digitized and posted online, in addition to website support. See above, i.e. particularly these lectures are available for future geography students.and the Study Guide written by Dean Sanford has also been scanned to help focus students. VII. College Strategic Plan Relevance Check all that apply New program under development Program that is integral to your college’s overall strategy Program that is essential for transfer Program that serves a community niche Programs where student enrollment or success has been demonstrably affected by extraordinary external factors, such as barriers due to housing, employment, childcare etc. Other Page 4 of 7 VIII. Action Plan Please describe your plan for responding to the above data. Consider curriculum, pedagogy/instructional, scheduling, and marketing strategies. Also, please reference any cross district collaboration with the same discipline at other Peralta colleges. Include overall plans/goals and specific action steps. The Geography Department has developed a thriving program and continues to do more with less. All of the courses are articulated, meeting general education requirements for both the AA degree and transfer to four-year higher learning institutions. The geography courses also meet the undergraduate requirements for a Bachelor’s degree in Geography. Geography 1, Geography 1L, Geography 2, and Geology 10 have California Articulation (CAN) numbers. Geography is an interdiscplinary science course designed for those who have limited science background. Geography covers all sciences, and is like a survey course for those continuing on to transfer. Health care and Green Jobs are academic disciplines that can benefit from such a survey course as they fill in the needs of their degrees. Geography fills a community niche in providing environmental literacy. In an era of changing climates and resource limitations, an geographic understanding helps provide context for understanding change and reacting to it. Cultural Geography explores current geo-political topics. Geology stresses earthquake awareness. Geography Lab is redesigned to study the Laney campus channel to Lake Merritt to provide water quality measures to the City of Oakland for Measure DD, that will change the tidal flow signicantly. Oakland High School is also is taking pre-restoration data in Lake Merritt, and we will share data with them. Geography and Earth Sciences are among the few courses at Laney that address the Vision of the College: “Laney College is a dynamic, diverse environment where all are encouraged to be responsible community members, leaders and world citizens.” Geography is a reflection of the greater Bay Area community, and students are challenged by economic and social forces. Our course is offered with a computerized text for the reading enhancement, and taped lectures and online notes. Page 5 of 7 IX. Needs Please describe and prioritize any faculty, classified, and student assistant needs. With one full time, and one adjunct, the ability to grow beyond our existing size is impossible. Additional faculty will allow more students to be taught and prepared for future jobs. • • PT faculty is needed to develop and teach a Geographic Information System certificate. Please describe and prioritize any equipment, material, and supply needs. Continued need for computers, GIS software and and lab equipment for water testing. Please describe and prioritize any facilities needs. A computer lab is necessary for full development of a Geographic Information System; 12 laptop computers, hard drives and printers are required.Secure premises were computers, printers and data storage can occur are needed. PT faculty is needed to develop and teach this certificate. Wireless internet access would facilitate classroom presentations. Student assistance is also needed for a full functioning department. Student tutors would help in retention efforts Page 6 of 7 X.
