Peralta Community College District
Annual Program Update Template 2010-2011
Each discipline will complete this form to update program reviews developed in 2009-2010. These will
be reviewed at the college level and then forwarded to the district-wide planning and budgeting
process. The information on this form is required for all resource requests – including faculty staffing
requests – for the 2011-12 budget year.

Qualitative Assessments
CTE and Vocational: Community and labor market
relevance. Present evidence of community need
based on Advisory Committee input, industry need
data, McIntyre Environmental Scan, McKinsey
Economic Report, licensure and job placement rates,
etc.
Transfer and Basic Skills: Describe how your
course offerings address transfer, basic skills, and
program completion.

All our courses, ASTR 1, PHYS 10, and PHYS
4ABC, fulfill general education requirements in
the physical sciences. PHYS 10 fulfills
prerequisites for many allied health fields.
PHYS 4ABC fulfills prerequisites in calculusbased physics for students in the physical
sciences, engineering, architecture, and related
fields. The Peralta Community Colleges do not
offer associates' degrees in these areas.

VI. Strategic Planning Goals
Check all that apply.
Describe how goal applies to your program.
Advance Student Access, Success & Equity
Engage our Communities & Partners
Build Programs of Distinction
Create a Culture of Innovation & Collaboration
Develop Resources to Advance & Sustain Mission
EQUITY: PHYS 10 was introduced as an
online course in Spring 2010. This course has
been popular with students who attend regular
face-to-face classes at PCCD, as well as with
students who require alternate formats.
COMMUNITIES: A highlight of PHYS 4C are
the field trips during which students experience
the flavor of large-scale scientific research.
DISTINCTION: Students who complete our
courses have a high transfer rate to a variety of
institutions.
COLLABORATION: Patti Tsai regularly
organizes district-wide physics discipline
meetings. She taught Physics 3A at Berkeley
City College in Spring 2010, and is assisting
Allen Nicol with Physics 3A labs at Laney
College in Fall 2010.
VII. College Strategic Plan Relevance
Check all that apply
New program under development
Program that is integral to your college’s overall strategy
Program that is essential for transfer
Program that serves a community niche
Programs where student enrollment or success has been demonstrably affected by extraordinary
external factors, such as barriers due to housing, employment, childcare etc.

VIII. Action Plan
Please describe your plan for responding to the above data. Consider curriculum,
pedagogy/instructional, scheduling, and marketing strategies. Also, please reference any cross district
collaboration with the same discipline at other Peralta colleges.
Include overall plans/goals and specific action steps.
College of Alameda has had challenges in the past few years with offering a full load for the full-time
instructor, Patti Tsai. The strong recent emphasis on districtwide scheduling of classes is appropriate
for physics so that campuses do not compete with each other for students. The recent cutbacks across
the district shows how many physics classes can be fully enrolled each semester.
Patti taught Physics 3A at Berkeley City College in Spring 2010, and is assisting Allen Nicol with Physics 3A
labs at Laney College in Fall 2010. She is enjoying the cross-campus collaboration very much, not only
in terms of dealing with other faculty, but also in terms of seeing the same students on all campuses!
Patti also has an FSA in mathmatics, and has taught developmental math at BCC and COA, and has served
in the Math Lab at COA.
IX. Needs
Please describe and prioritize any faculty, classified, and student assistant needs.
1. We continue to request curriculum development funds in the amount of $2000. Funds were allocated
for our adjunct instructor, Mark Wong, during the 2007-2008 fiscal year, but these funds were not
distributed. He should be compensated for work already completed ($1000), and allowed to complete
the remaining work, which will greatly facilitate the move to 860 Atlantic Ave.
2. Student aides, approximately $1000/year, are needed to assist the instructors, classified staff, and
students.
3. The instructor works very hard on laboratory preparations.
Please describe and prioritize any equipment, material, and supply needs.
1.
We have been ordering items through Measure A funding. We are experiencing delays in placing
the requisitions and difficulty in tracking the status of these orders.
Please describe and prioritize any facilities needs.
1. Sand and varnish butcher block lab benches in D103, in preparation for our move to 860 Atlantic. The
lab benches are sound, but have 30 years of graffiti. (The architects stated on 10/27/08 that these lab
benches will be moved to 860 Atlantic, but we need to refurbish them regardless!)
