Meeting Notes from Monday, May 18, 2015
Present: Srujana Tumu, Vinh Pham, Brad Balukjian, Ann Buchalter, Ed Loretto, Linda Sanford

I. Distance Education definition: agreed to use the ACCJC definition of distance education.

II. ACCJC Crosswalk: Linda reported on issues identified in the recent accreditation visiting
team reports:
1. Distance Education Addendum



No verification on student contact required
No accommodations for DSPS students
No verification of instructor training in DE modality
2. Student Support Services lacking



Online tutoring
Online counseling
No student training in use of Moodle
3. Institutional Effectiveness



No process for systematic review of the # of DE courses in programs,
certificates and degrees
No comparative analysis of student success in DE versus face-to-face
courses
No comparative analysis of SLOs in DE versus face-to-face courses

III. Professional Development: Ed Loretto shared information about a Moodle users
conference (MoodleMoot) in Minnesota in early August. * After the meeting I shared this info
with Dr. Orkin and recommended that the District send Srujana to this conference. He agreed
that this is a good idea.
IV. Other issues we discussed:






CIPD – revising the DE Addendum
Evaluation of faculty – urgent need to revise the evaluations forms for
teaching in the DE modality
Campus DE committees – do they exist?
Integrated (District-wide) student support services
Use of third party services for online tutoring
Communication – need for newsletters and/or quarterly reports to generate
interest and support of distance education
V. Next meeting: during FLEX days. Linda will schedule time, preferably on Wednesday
afternoon. At that time, we will report on progress made during the summer, schedule
subsequent face-to-face meetings, and develop the timeline for completion of the DE Strategic
Plan.
