This qualification has been reviewed. The last date to meet the requirements is 31
December 2019.
Transition Arrangements
This qualification has been reviewed and replaced by the New Zealand Certificate in
Alpine Resort Operations (Level 3) [Ref: 3224] and the New Zealand Certificate in Sport,
Exercise, and Leisure Operations (Level 3) [Ref: 3225].
The last date for entry into programmes leading to the replaced qualification is 31
December 2017, when the replaced qualification will be designated expiring.
The last date to meet the requirements of the replaced qualification will be 31 December
2019, when the qualification will be discontinued. From that date, no results can be
reported against the qualification.
People currently working towards the replaced qualification may either complete the
requirements by 31 December 2019 or transfer their results to one of the replacement
qualifications.

Purpose
This qualification is designed for people wanting to explore employment pathways in the
recreation and sport industry. It includes standards that cover the core skills required for
employment in the recreation and sport industry and also allows the choice between
standards relevant to a range of employment pathways in this industry.
The Compulsory section includes standards which cover core skills and knowledge which
relate to providing customer service, maintaining personal presentation and a positive
attitude in a workplace, workplace health and safety, completing an incidence report,
communicating with people from other cultures, participating in a group or team, describing
recreation, and demonstrating professional behaviour in a recreation workplace.
Elective 1 allows people to select standards from the Recreation and Sport – Aquatics,
Recreation and Sport - Coaching and Instruction, Recreation and Sport - Programmes and
Events, Recreation and Sport - Core Skills, Exercise Prescription, Fitness Education,
Fitness Assessment and Individual Fitness Instruction, Group Fitness Instruction, and
Fitness Industry Education domains. In this way, they can gain skills and knowledge
which are relevant to their areas of interest or their workplace.
Elective 2 allows people to select standards from anywhere on the Directory of
Assessment Standards. In this way, they can choose from a wide range of standards
which cover skills and knowledge relevant to their recreation workplace practice.
Candidates can pathway from this qualification to the National Certificate in Recreation
and Sport (Level 3) [Ref: 1711], National Certificate in Sport Officiating (Level 3)
[Ref: 1607], National Certificate in Recreation and Sport - Coaching and Instruction with
strands in Cycle Skills Instructor, and Developing Coach [Ref: 1626], or the National
Certificate in Community Recreation (Aquatics) (Level 3) [Ref: 0937].
Replacement Information
This qualification replaced the National Certificate in Sport (Level 2) [Ref: 0493].

Requirements for Award of Qualification
Award of NZQF National Qualifications
Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.
Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the
purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided on the New Zealand
Qualifications Authority (NZQA) website: http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualificationsstandards/standards/standards-exclusion-list/.
Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions
and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to
meet qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the
standard.

Transition Arrangements
Version 1 of this qualification was republished in April 2012 to correct an error in the
classifications listed in elective 2.
This qualification replaced the National Certificate in Sport (Level 2) [Ref: 0493].
Candidates currently enrolled in programmes or courses leading to the award of versions 3
or 4 of the replaced qualification may either complete the requirements for those versions
by 31 December 2012 or transfer to this replacement qualification. Candidates that wish
to complete versions 3 or 4 of the replaced qualification must gain credit for standard 4879
before it expires in December 2011. However, the content of the two qualifications is
significantly different and the only standard that they share in common is standard 1304.

this qualification, people who have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt
from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards – see table below.
