This unit standard is for people who work in water reticulation.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: excavate
and prepare base; install thrust, anti-scour, and anchor blocks;
carry out backfilling and clear the site; and demonstrate
knowledge of regulatory requirements, selection of methods
and materials, and the concept of thrust, as applied to the
installation of thrust, anti-scour, and anchor blocks.

This unit standard applies to thrust, anti-scour, and anchor blocks made from precast concrete, blocks in-situ, and suitably ground-treated timbers.

Definitions
Organisational procedures refer to instructions to staff, and procedures which are
documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These
requirements include but are not limited to – site specific requirements,
manufacturers’ specifications, product quality specifications, and legislative or
regulatory requirements.
Specification – the drawings and specification setting out the position and standards
for the proposed work.

Credit for this unit standard does not qualify the candidate to work in a drainlaying
situation that comes under the drainlayers licence requirements issued under the
Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006 and any subsequent amendments.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Excavate and prepare base.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Excavation is carried out in accordance with the specification and organisational
procedures.
1.2
Stable sub-base is identified in accordance with visual assessment and the
specification.
1.3
Base material is selected, placed, and levelled in accordance with site
conditions and the specification.
Outcome 2
Install thrust, anti-scour, and anchor blocks.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Blocks are positioned in accordance with the specification.
2.2
Blocks are installed in accordance with the specification.
2.3
Blocks and associated fittings are protected in accordance with the
specification.
Outcome 3
Carry out backfilling and clear the site.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Site is backfilled, and compacted as necessary, in accordance with the
specification.
3.2
Site is cleared of construction debris and working equipment in accordance with
organisational procedures.
Outcome 4
Demonstrate knowledge of regulatory requirements, selection of methods and materials,
and the concept of thrust, as applied to the installation of thrust, anti-scour, and anchor
blocks.

4.1
Relevant sections of legislation, standards, and codes are described in terms of
