Purpose
This unit standard is for people either in the motor or glazing industries who
are involved in automotive re-glazing.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare to remove and fit
direct glazed windscreens and side and rear glass; remove direct glazed
windscreens and side and rear glass; fit direct glazed windscreens and side
and rear glass; check fitment of direct glazed windscreens and side and rear
glass; and clean work areas and maintain equipment.

Definitions
Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures, which
are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace.
These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and
procedures, work instructions, manufacturer’s specifications, product quality
specifications, and legislative requirements.
Manufacturer’s instructions refer to specifications and/or instructions provided by the
manufacturer for the correct installation and operation of the product(s) or system(s)
provided by that manufacturer.
Materials and equipment means industry approved materials and equipment that are
recognised within the industry as being the most suited to complete the task in a
professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices.
Personal protective equipment refers to clothing and equipment used for the
protection of eyes, hands, feet, and hair.

For this unit standard, it is essential that the practical assessment evidence is
obtained from commercial jobs in the workplace under normal workplace conditions.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Prepare to remove and fit direct glazed windscreens and side and rear glass.
Performance criteria
1.1
Job requirements are determined from work instructions and the glass
manufacturer’s specifications in terms of method to be used, materials, and
equipment required.
1.2
Vehicle preparation requirements are determined in accordance with the glass
manufacturer’s instructions.

1.3
Health and safety requirements are identified in terms of personal protective
equipment, materials, and equipment requirements.
1.4
Materials and equipment required for the removal and fit are selected in
accordance with the glass manufacturer’s instructions.
1.5
Procedures for minimising waste material are identified in accordance with
company requirements.
Element 2
Remove direct glazed windscreens and side and rear glass.
Performance criteria
2.1
Tools and equipment are used to enable the window glass to be removed and
broken glass to be recovered in accordance with the job requirements.
2.2
The window glass moulding (trim) is removed, without damage to the moulding
in accordance with the glass manufacturer’s instructions.
2.3
All window glass, including any broken glass, is removed from its aperture,
without causing damage to the materials, equipment, vehicle, or personnel.
Element 3
Fit fixed direct glazed windscreens and side and rear glass.
Performance criteria
3.1
Tools and equipment are selected and used in accordance with the glass
manufacturer’s instructions.
3.2
Window glass and aperture are prepared for fitment of the glass in accordance
with the glass manufacturer’s instructions.
3.3
Window glass and mouldings are fitted to the vehicle, and there is no damage,
water leakage, or signs of excess sealant in accordance with the glass
manufacturer’s instructions.
3.4
Adhesive is checked to ensure curing time meets industry safety standards.
3.5
When applicable, the rear view mirror is attached to the windscreen in the
position and manner specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
3.6
Registration and Warrant of Fitness (WoF) or Certificate of Fitness (CoF) labels
are transferred to the replacement screen, in accordance with legislative
requirements, if current and intact, or returned to customer if not.

3.7
Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with
legislative requirements.

Check fitment of direct glazed windscreens and side and rear glass.
Performance criteria
4.1
Work is checked, and glass is secured in accordance with company
requirements.
4.2
Defective parts are identified and reported in accordance with company
requirements.
4.3
Problems encountered in the installation are identified, recorded, and reported
in accordance with company requirements.

materials, defective equipment and tools.

Clean work areas and maintain equipment.

5.1
Re-usable materials are identified and stored in accordance with the
manufacturer’s instructions and company requirements.
5.2
Waste and scrap are removed from the work area in accordance with company
requirements.
5.3
Work area is cleaned and inspected and left in a safe and serviceable condition
in accordance with company requirements.
5.4
Equipment is maintained in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and
company requirements.
5.5
Work area is maintained in a safe and serviceable condition in accordance with
company requirements.

Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body
with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from
assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before
they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
