This unit standard is intended for people entering the industry
to ensure they have a basic understanding of the content and
application of legislation and codes of practice relevant to work
on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate
knowledge of: legislation and codes of practice relating to work
on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, and legislation
and codes of practice relating to refrigerants.

Definitions
RAC – Refrigeration and air conditioning.
Mechanical building services – Heating ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC).
IRHACE – the New Zealand Institute of Refrigeration, Heating and Air conditioning
Engineers
Workplace procedures – procedures used by the organisation carrying out the work
and applicable to the tasks being carried out. They may include but are not limited to
– standard operating procedures, site safety procedures, equipment operating
procedures, codes of practice, quality assurance procedures, housekeeping
standards, procedures to comply with legislative and local body requirements.

Legislation and codes of practice include - AS/NZS1677 1998 parts 1 & 2; Health and
Safety in Employment (Pressure Equipment, Cranes, and Passenger Ropeways)
Regulation 1999; ISO 817; AS1668.1; AS/NZS 3000:2007; and AS/NZS 3666:2011
Air-handling and water systems of buildings - Microbial control
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of legislation and codes of practice relating to work on
refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Legislation and codes that apply to refrigeration and air conditioning work are
stated and an overview of their application is provided.
1.2
Legislation and codes are accessed from Government and IRHACE websites.
1.3
Examples of workplace procedures used by the candidate’s employer to comply
with legislation and codes are provided.
Range
1.4
a minimum of two workplace procedures.
Examples of the consequences of breaching legislation and codes are provided.
Range
a minimum of two examples.
Outcome 2
Demonstrate knowledge of legislation and codes of practice relating to refrigerants.
Evidence requirements
2.1
The training and certification requirements relating to handling and filling of
compressed gases used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems are
outlined in accordance with current legislation.

2.2
The requirements for storage and handling of refrigerants are outlined in terms
of current legislation.
2.3
The obligations of employers and employees relating to the use of ozone
depleting refrigerants are outlined in accordance with the current legislation.

applies to those standards.
