This unit standard is intended for people who lead, or wish to
lead, groups participating in an introductory outdoor recreation
activity in low-risk environments within an organisation’s safety
management system. Leaders are expected to work under
direct or indirect supervision of an instructor or guide.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: plan an
outdoor recreation activity for a group; lead an outdoor
recreation activity; and evaluate own performance as a leader
of an outdoor recreation activity.

Explanatory notes
1
Definition
Organisational requirements refer to policy and procedures of the outdoor activities
organisation, and include compliance with any applicable legislation, standards, and
codes.

For assessment purposes the outdoor activity may be a navigation session, a team
initiative, or one session or sessions that are part of a one-day introductory outdoor
recreation experience, which is equivalent to one hour total duration.

All activities must comply with relevant environmental, legislative, and/or regulatory
requirements set out in the New Zealand Environmental Care Code, Health and
Safety in Employment Act 1992, Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Compensation
Act 2001, and their subsequent amendments. The New Zealand Environmental Care
Code is available from the Department of Conservation, Head Office, PO Box 10420,
Wellington 6143, or at http://www.doc.govt.nz/.

For assessment purposes, it is desirable to use evidence from log books, equipment
logs, issue and return documentation, day books, and other recording mechanisms
typically used as part of good organisational practice.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Plan an outdoor recreation activity for a group.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Plan identifies activity goals, key learning points, logical sequence, resources,
timeframes, and timing.
1.2
Plan includes key communication phases with the group.
Range
1.3
key communication phases include but are not limited to – building
rapport, activity briefing, key safety points, teaching and
instruction, feedback, activity closure.
Participant limitations for the demands of the activity are identified.
Range
limitations may include but is not limited to – age, physical
considerations, medical conditions, pre-existing injuries, cultural
considerations.
1.4
Special requirements to address participant’s limitations are met professionally
in accordance with organisational requirements.
1.5
The risks of the activity are assessed in accordance with organisational
requirements and/or current industry practice.
1.6
The plan includes required equipment, including necessary safety equipment in
accordance with organisational requirements.
1.7
The plan includes alternate arrangements as result of change in weather, group
needs, and/or logistical issues.

Lead an outdoor recreation activity.

2.1
Participants are briefed in accordance with the activity plan.

The activity is brought to a close in accordance with the activity plan.

NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
