Explanatory notes 1 This unit standard is specifically designed for Human Resource practitioners. 2 Māori concepts include: Manaakitanga, or providing hospitality, is a fundamental practice that has a range of applications. An associated aspect is the concept of tiaki or caring for others. A common example of manaakitanga is the practice of providing food for guests. The particular aspects of mana referred to here are respect and status of individuals. Respect for others and therefore, their mana, is very important. Tuakana and teina refer to the traditional relationship between older (tuakana) and younger (teina) – that is, senior and junior – relatives. The concept stresses the importance of seniors mentoring juniors for joint benefit. Wairua refers to the spiritual dimension that has an explicit effect on the way people operate in the physical world. Concepts of wairua also encompass mental and psychological wellbeing. Range concepts include – manaakitanga, mana tangata, tuakana and teina, wairua, whanaungatanga, mate, tangihanga. Evidence requirements 1.1 Analysis identifies effects of selected Māori concepts on workplace practices. 1.2 Analysis examines implications of selected Māori concepts on human resource management policies. 1.3 Alternative options to existing practices and policies and likely effects of the options are examined. Outcome 2 Design protocols, policies or guidelines for inter-personal communication with and between Māori staff. Evidence requirements 2.1 Workplace practices specify inter-personal protocols. Range 2.2 2.3 protocols may include but are not limited to – use of hongi, use of mihi, use of karakia, use of te reo Māori. Evidence of any three protocols.
