NZQA registered unit standard 29172 version 1 Page 1 of 3 Title Describe feeds and carry out feeding requirements of horses in training Level 3 Purpose Credits 5 This unit standard is intended for people who are required to demonstrate understanding of feeds and feeding in the routine day to day care of horses in training in an equine racing industry context. People will be working under limited supervision with responsibility for their work routines. Classification Equine>Equine Care Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Demonstration of competency must be consistent with: Workplace and/or stable procedures Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 Code of Welfare: Horses and Donkeys available at http://www.mpi.govt.nz. 2 Candidates must demonstrate competency in either a commercial horse enterprise or a recognised voluntary equine organisation. 3 Horses in training may include all stages of training from spelling to peak performance, letting down, during rest or injury, and when unwell at any stage during training. 4 In the context of this unit standard, understanding means that there should be evidence of a learners’ thorough comprehension of a topic. A learner with a good understanding of a topic should have applied, or should be able to apply what they have learnt to a workplace situation and will be able to alter their practices to the different contexts they are applying their learning to. Assessors should be confident that the learners’ understanding is embedded in their practices and behaviour. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate understanding of common raw and commercially processed horse feeds used in racing establishments and the nutritional and feed requirements of horses in training. Range may include but is not limited to - grains, commercially processed feeds, roughage. 1.2 Assesses quality of feed using features of appearance, smell, touch, and taste for suitability for equine consumption. 1.3 Identifies the types, quality, and nutritional composition of commonly used feeds. Range may include but is not limited to - grains, commercially processed feeds, roughage. 1.4 Describes feed processing methods. 1.5 Describes the nutritional and feed requirements of horses in training. Range protein, energy, roughage, vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, water. Outcome 2 Carry out feeding requirements for horses in training. Evidence requirements 2.1 Prepares, combines, and places individual feeds in horses stable with consideration for individual horse feeding behaviour. 2.2 Places and secures hay in the stable. 2.3 Maintains water for horses. 2.4 Records and reports feed consumption, feeding behaviour, and problems of feeding. 2.5 Describes the causes and treatment or management of problems of feeding.
