This unit standard is for people in the cleaning industry.
People credited with this standard are able to: prepare to clean
telephones, computer keyboards and computer screens; clean
telephones; clean computer keyboards and computer screens;
and complete job-related tasks.

Explanatory notes
1
Competence demonstrated during assessment against this standard must comply
with the requirements of:
Employment Relations Act 2000;
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992;
Resource Management Act 1991.

Equipment and cleaning agents must be used in accordance with manufacturers’
recommendations.

Definitions
Industry best practice refers to any enterprise and/or establishment requirements,
practices, policy, procedures, methods and protocols which are in accordance with
applicable legislation, regulations and New Zealand Standards.
Contract specifications set down the tasks to be done and how often these tasks are
to be done.
Industry guidelines for the cleaning of computers are available from the Building
Service Contractors Industry Training Organisation (http://www.bscito.org.nz).

Cleaning must not be attempted when a computer and/or screen are turned on. The
assessor is responsible for ensuring the client has switched off the computer. This
standard is restricted to external surfaces of telephones and computers.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Prepare to clean telephones, computer keyboards, and computer screens.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Selected cleaning equipment is clean and in working condition.
Range
gloves, mini-vac or compressed air bottle, proprietary cleaner or
cleaning wipes or cleaning solution, non-linting cloths or microfibre
cloths or colour coded cloths, cotton buds, telephone sanitiser.
1.2
Availability of telephones, computer keyboards or computer screens for
cleaning is confirmed in accordance with industry best practice.
1.3
Warning signs are displayed in accordance with industry best practice.
Range
1.4
at least one of – signs, cordons, barriers.
Cleaning solution, if required, is prepared in accordance with manufacturer’s
recommendations.
Outcome 2
Clean telephones.
Range
evidence of a minimum of four telephones is required.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Cleaning solution or sanitiser or cleaning wipes are applied to, and removed
from, telephones in accordance manufacturer’s recommendations.
Range
2.2
hand-set, cradle, button or dial area.
May include – base surround, hood, flex.
Cleaning service provided meets contract specifications, and cleaning process
does not damage telephones mechanisms.
Outcome 3
Clean computer keyboards and computer screens.
Range
evidence is required for at least four computer keyboards and screens.
Screens may be either Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), or Light Emitting Diode
(LED) or Cathode Ray Tube (CRT).

3.1
Computers and screens are checked to ensure they are switched off and plugs
are removed from power source.
3.2
Cleaning solution or proprietary cleaner is applied to, and removed from,
computers in accordance with industry guidelines and manufacturer’s
recommendations.
Range

May include – removal, cleaning and refitting of anti-glare screen.
3.3
Cleaning equipment is used in accordance with manufacturer’s
recommendations and industry practice.
3.4
Cleaning service provided meets contract specifications, and the cleaning
process does not damage computer keyboards and screens.
Outcome 4
Complete job-related tasks.
Evidence requirements
4.1
Work area is cleared in accordance with industry best practice.
4.2
Waste is removed and disposed of in accordance with the Resource
Management Act 1991.
4.3
Cleaning equipment is cleaned, checked and stored in accordance with industry
best practice.
4.4
Tasks are completed without risk or damage to cleaner or clients.
This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by
the last date for assessment set out below.

Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA,
before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses
of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
