NZQA registered unit standard 26547 version 1 Page 1 of 3 Title Instruct beginner cyclists in cycle handling skills Level 3 Purpose Credits 6 This unit standard is designed for people who work or intend to work as instructors in cyclist skills training. People credited with this unit standard are able to instruct beginner cyclists in legal requirements and safety equipment for bicycles, and in core cycle handling skills using exercises. Classification Recreation and Sport > Recreation and Sport - Coaching and Instruction Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 It is recommended a cyclist skills training instructor must be able to: - demonstrate knowledge of road traffic environments and hold a current drivers licence; - demonstrate cycling experience of complex road traffic conditions; - hold a current First Aid certificate; and, - complete a satisfactory police check when working with school children. 2 When working within school settings, a completed risk management and assessment system (RAMS) form will be required for the course of instruction. Guideline for cyclist skills training instructors refers to Cyclist skills training – A guide for the set-up and delivery of cyclist training in New Zealand, available from New Zealand Transport Agency, http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/cyclist-skills-trainingguide. The Guideline includes guidance to the core skills, exercises, observable outcomes, defined road traffic environments, course duration including number of lessons per course, and course objectives for beginner, intermediate, and advanced cyclist skills training courses. Trainee in the context of this unit standard refers to the person being trained by the candidate, in cyclist skills. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Instruct beginner cyclists in legal requirements and safety equipment for bicycles. Evidence requirements 1.1 Legal requirements for bike accessories, equipment and helmet are explained in accordance with the Rule. 1.2 Trainee compliance with the Rule for the legal requirements for bike accessories, equipment and helmet is checked. 1.3 Helmet and bicycle checks are explained and demonstrated in accordance with the Rule. Range 1.4 safe to use, unsafe to use, consequences. Instruction results in beginner cyclists demonstrating their understanding of legal requirements and safety equipment for bicycles to meet the Rule. Outcome 2 Instruct beginner cyclists in core cycle handling skills using exercises. Evidence requirements 2.1 Beginner cyclists are instructed in core cyclist skills using exercises in accordance with the Guideline. Range 2.2 mount and dismount; start without help; stop quickly and with control; steer in direction; look behind; signal stop, left turn, right turn; use of gears. Optional exercises for beginner cyclists, where used, develop more advanced manoeuvring skills and balance and control in accordance with the Guideline. Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
