Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare for
producing a composite item using resin transfer moulding
(RTM) light; produce a composite item using RTM light; and
carry out safety precautions while producing a composite item
by RTM light.

1
Definitions
Equipment refers to applicators, dispensers, measuring devices, cutters and cleaning
utensils.
Process specification refers to the documented order and method of applying the
materials to manufacture the item (time, materials, temperature, application rates).
Specification requirements refer to the documented requirements of the
manufactured item.
RTM light – low pressure closed moulding resin transfer technique that uses a semi
rigid matched pair of moulds clamped closed by a perimeter flange. Cavity vacuum
is typically less than 0.5 bar.
Worksite procedures refer to the documented procedures for the machine and
worksite.

All worksite procedures must meet recognised codes of practice such as the Code of
Practice for Health and Safety in the Manufacture of Composites Based on Synthetic
Resins (Fibreglass), Composites Association of New Zealand, 1998. This code, and
other relevant codes of practice, are available from the Composites Association of
New Zealand, PO Box 75 345, Manurewa, Manukau 2243, or at
http://www.osh.dol.govt.nz/order/catalogue/composites.shtml. They include
obligations required under current legislation. All worksite procedures must also
meet documented worksite safety procedures (where these exceed the code) for
personal, product and worksite safety.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Prepare for producing a composite item by RTM light.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Plan of injection and vacuum is verified in accordance with process
specification.
Range
includes but is not limited to – resin input positions, vacuum
positions, resin pathways, expected injection time, resin cure
times, resin to reinforcement ratio.
1.2
Mould is prepared in accordance with process specification.
1.3
Pre-form materials are positioned in accordance with process specification.
1.4
Injection and vacuum equipment is set up in accordance with process
specification.
1.5
Injection and vacuum equipment is calibrated in accordance with process
specifications.
Outcome 2
Produce a composite item using RTM light.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Injection and vacuum process is in accordance with process specification.
2.2
Laminate meets specification requirements.
Range
includes but is not limited to – cure, porosity, resin to
reinforcement ratio.
Outcome 3
Carry out safety precautions while producing a composite item by RTM light.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Materials are handled according to safety data sheet recommendations and the
code of practice.
3.2
Safety equipment is used according to worksite procedures.
3.3
Safety precautions are carried out according to the equipment manufacturer's
recommendations.
