National Certificate in Sailmaking
Level
4
Credits
196
This qualification has been reviewed. The last date to meet the requirements is 31
December 2016.
Purpose
This certificate is for people in the Sailmaking industry. The certificate is one of the criteria
for registration with the NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation as a Sailmaker. All
holders of this certificate will be able to demonstrate knowledge of sails and rigging and
make, modify, and repair sails. They will also be able to meet customers and sell goods
and services. In the elective section they will have the choice of doing related canvas
work, making a boat cockpit canopy, performing management and marketing tasks,
operating a plot cutter, and designing sails.
The qualification is a stand alone qualification and is designed to recognised generic skills
as well as workplace skills. It also gives the opportunity for trainees to obtain
management, marketing, and sail design skills. There are a number of Canvas Fabrication
unit standards in the qualification, which would make it easier for trainees to lead on to the
National Certificate in Canvas Fabrication.
Special Notes
It is expected that most people will undertake training towards this qualification in the form
of an apprenticeship. Although most training will be carried out on the job through the use
of training manuals and record of achievement books, combinations of unit standards or
individual unit standards may be offered by accredited polytechnics and private training
establishments.
Applications for the recognition of prior learning should be made to the NZ Motor Industry
Training Organisation and accredited training providers. Credits are not automatic and
normally an assessment of ability is required.

Requirements for Award of Qualification
Award of NZQF National Qualifications
Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.
Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the
purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided on the New Zealand Qualifications
Authority (NZQA) website: http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/standards/standards-exclusionlist/.
Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions
and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet
qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.
