Application 2008 – 2009 Academic Year What is Spectrum? Spectrum is a program that brings together teams of SFSU biology students to offer afterschool science clubs targeted at middle and high school girls of color in the Bay Area to educate them on women’s health issues and biomedical research being conducted by SFSU researchers who are women of color. Spectrum aims to establish a mentoring community of girls and women of color with interests in biomedical research who are undergrads, graduate students, doctoral students, and faculty. Who are the Spectrum teams and what do they do? Spectrum teams consist of one middle or school science teacher, one undergraduate biology major, one graduate biology major, and one doctoral student or biomedical researcher who is an SFSU alumna (see picture below). Each team will work with one group of middle or high school girls. Teams will consist of four women that will collaborate to plan and teach after-school science clubs to girls, once a month from September 2008 to May 2009.
