Classification Science > Science - Core Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Scientific equipment refers to items of equipment used for any of – measurement: distance, volume, mass, time, temperature, voltage, current, resistance, pH heating: solid, liquid population studies: population size, population density, population diversity identifying: rocks, minerals, or cells locating: focal point of a concave, convex mirrors, or lenses. 2 Assessment for this unit standard is to be in practical situations, with the candidate observed using the equipment. 3 Where laboratory work is involved, learners’ health and safety practices must comply with AS/NZS 2243.1: 2005 Safety in laboratories – Planning and operational aspects, AS/NZS 2243.10:2004 Safety in laboratories - Storage of chemicals and safety procedures for Code of Practice for School Exempt Laboratories, available at http://www.chemteach.ac.nz. 4 Legislation and regulations applicable to this unit standard includes: Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 Hazardous Substances (Exempt Laboratories) Regulations 2001. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Select and use scientific equipment. Range six items of scientific equipment including at least two that are used for measurement.
