Biography of Andrew Hudgins, author of Diary of a Poem Though I’ve often been called a Southern poet, I was raised in a military family and grew up all over the country and abroad—Texas, New Mexico, England, Ohio, North Carolina, Southern California, France, and Alabama. And since I left home, I have lived in Alabama, New York, Iowa, California, Texas, Ohio, Maryland, and Tennessee. I have been a poet and a compulsive joke teller all my life and a lot of these essays area about the places where the two things come together. I grew up in a strongly evangelical Southern Baptist family, and the essays and interviews often deal with my attempts to come to an intellectual understanding of the faith I grew up in. I am married to the novelist Erin McGraw, and we have two dogs: Max, a ninety pound labradoodle, and Sister, a fifty-pound coonhound mix, both rescues.
