UNITED NATIONS LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAMME LEARNING SERVICE, OHRM DISCOURSE STRATEGIES, Part II Course Code: E6S4/1 Duration: This course is held twice a week for 12 weeks. (Please check posted schedules for dates and time.) Description: This course builds on the fundamental ideas of effective formal communication presented in Discourse Strategies, Part I. Students study more advanced language and strategies for effective communication in meetings, presentations and negotiations. In particular, the course focuses on the meaning and use of common expressions, cross-cultural differences in communication styles and the strategies for negotiation currently promoted by most experts in the field. Objectives: This course will provide participants with the opportunity to: Assess their audience and formulate their style of speech accordingly Utilise specific strategies for the most effective delivery of a message Choose from a wider range of appropriate vocabulary and expressions Execute effective functions of language such as interrupting, clarifying, commenting, questioning, proposing, stating preferences, persuading, taking the floor, and conducting a formal meeting Develop their overall speaking skills via various class activities and discussions Recognize and use ‘principled negotiation’ strategies as introduced in the book, Getting to Yes Interact confidently with native speakers in English. Eligibility: Successful completion of Discourse Strategies Part I or if you are a native speaker of English or have permission from the English Language Coordinator
