From: Mike Estep Sent: Tuesday, October 05, 2010 2:41 PM To: Johnny Carroll Subject: Summary of CIS/IT Course and Program Modifications Summary of CIS/IT Course and Program Modifications TECH 3033 Course Modification TECH 3033 Production Planning will be changed to TECH 3033 Project Management. The current course is already similar in content to project management (with minor differences) and has a focus on operations management. Changing the primary focus to project management (also requiring a description change) will better reflect the needs of local industry, making our students more marketable to employers. MIS 3033 Course Modification MIS 3033 Applied Data Modeling will be changed to MIS 3033 Database Design and Management. The course title change will be more closely aligned with ACM IS 2010 recommendations. Course description and prerequisite changes are also necessary to align with programming requirements of both CIS (411) and IT (414) bachelor degree programs. CIS (BS, 411) Program Modification MIS 3033 Database Management and Design will replace CIS 3083 Database Management and Design in “A. Technical Specialty.” The requested change will allow MIS to be represented in the major core. Also, both courses are very similar. Using a single database course will be more efficient in terms of course scheduling and faculty load assignments. IT (BS, 414) Program Modification MIS 3033 Database Management and Design will replace CIS 3083 Database Management and Design in “A. Core Courses.” MIS 3013 Management Information Systems will replace MIS 3033 Database Management and Design in “B. Option … 2. Management Information Systems.” TECH 3033 Project Management will replace MIS 3083 Systems Analysis and Design in “B. Option … 2. Management Information Systems.” MGMT 4443 Project Management will be remove from “C. Guided Electives.” The requested changes will allow MIS to be represented in the major core. Also, changes made in the MIS concentration will be more in line with management aspects of MIS that are expected by industry. A further result of the changes will be increased efficiency in course scheduling and faculty load. The removal of MGMT 4443 from “C. Guided Electives” is necessary because the School of Business no longer offers the course. The changes above will not affect total credit hours for either CIS 411 or IT 414 degree programs.
