Author biography for Donald A. Johnston Donald A. Johnston's love for the Great Lakes began at an early age during family vacations in Northern Michigan. Born and raised in Detroit, he is a graduate and emeritus alumnus of the University of Michigan. He served in World War II as a U.S. Navy Reserve officer and was decorated for service in the Philippines and in the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. His career includes forty years in the insurance business, and dedication to civic and community activities. An ardent sailing enthusiast, he has cruised the Great Lakes extensively. He has sailed winners in class boats and in offshore competition, including the classic regattas from both Port Huron and Chicago to Mackinac Island. He and his wife, the late Harriet Wolfs Johnston, have a son, daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
