Author biography for Donald A. Johnston
Donald A. Johnston's love for the Great Lakes began at an early age during family vacations in
Northern Michigan. Born and raised in Detroit, he is a graduate and emeritus alumnus of the
University of Michigan. He served in World War II as a U.S. Navy Reserve officer and was
decorated for service in the Philippines and in the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. His
career includes forty years in the insurance business, and dedication to civic and community
activities.
An ardent sailing enthusiast, he has cruised the Great Lakes extensively. He has sailed winners in
class boats and in offshore competition, including the classic regattas from both Port Huron and
Chicago to Mackinac Island.
He and his wife, the late Harriet Wolfs Johnston, have a son, daughter-in-law, and three
grandchildren in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
