It is intended for learners who have no command or very minimal command of English, but are literate in their own language. People credited with this unit standard are able to participate in very basic everyday spoken transactions (EL Foundation). Classification Languages > English Language Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 English Language (EL) refers to the acquisition of English as an additional language. 2 This unit standard may contribute to the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Foundation) (Level 1) [Ref: 1879]. It is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference low A1. 3 All assessment activities must be conducted in English, which must not be the candidate’s first language. Task instructions may be given in the candidate’s preferred language. 4 Assessment must be conducted in a highly supportive and familiar environment, in which the interlocutor speaks slowly and clearly, and affective barriers are minimised. Candidates may request assistance to understand the requirements of the assessment tasks. 5 The assessor must be satisfied that the candidate can independently demonstrate competence against the unit standard. 6 Two candidates may be assessed simultaneously, but each candidate must fulfil the requirements of the unit standard independently. 7 It is recommended that: i the outcomes are assessed as part of an integrated unit of work, relevant to the learning context of the candidate; ii assessment be conducted in conjunction with assessment against other English Language unit standards at this level. Candidate’s speech may be hesitant with long pauses, single words or short phrases, and may follow learnt formulas. 9 For the purposes of moderation, the assessment must be recorded audio-visually. Enquiries refer to asking for information. Everyday transactions refer to requests and enquiries. Requests refer to asking for assistance or services. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Participate in very basic spoken everyday transactions (EL Foundation). Range six spoken transactions, two of which are initiated by the learner, assessed on separate occasions, each in a different context and for a different purpose; a minimum of one transaction must include numbers; everyday transactions may include but are not limited to – asking the time or price, asking to borrow an item. Evidence requirements 1.1 Conventions of very basic spoken everyday interactions are used in a manner appropriate to context and participants. Range 1.2 Very basic enquiries and requests are made in a manner appropriate to the purpose, context, topic, and relationship between participants. Range 1.3 greetings, leave taking, common courtesies. minimum of three requests and two enquiries over six transactions.
