Scholarship – 2007 Printmaking Examples of Candidate Work 1 This submission tackled its topic with both humour and politic, critically addressing identified issues through pictorial image making, media and process. In both the workbook and portfolio it is clear there is a strong interest in this topic on the part of the candidate, which gives the investigation an enthusiastic and engaged sensibility. Use of media is systematically treated, food operating like traditional media, found image blended with illustrative and pictorial composition, expressive management of composition. There is a level of control apparent in the works on the portfolio that reinforce and substantiate the exploration. Traditional print methods integrate in interesting and appropriate forms with new media (food) on the portfolio. The workbook provides another series of works that expand on the nature of the thinking employed in the portfolio works. There is a sense of the performative present in the investigations documented in the workbook. This sense of play is transported to the portfolio in the treatment of subject matter, the interplay of motif, figure and object. Appropriate technical expertise is employed. There is an experimental use of media that purposefully relates to the subject and is key in expounding ideas. Various images and objects from popular culture are employed as signifiers to assert particular points-of-view/ contexts. These in turn have been manipulated into the candidate's own vocabulary for investigating their topic. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
