SACRAMENTO STATE ONE BOOK PROGRAM 2010-2011 Sacramento State One Book Essay Contest In honor of this year’s One Book, The Devil’s Highway by Luis Alberto Urrea, the Latino Alumni Chapter of Sacramento State University is sponsoring the First Annual One Book Program Essay Contest. First Prize: $500 Second Prize: $250 Deadline: March 21, 2011 by 5:00 pm. Submission: The essay and the contest form can be turned into either the GE Office (Sacramento Hall 234) or the Community Engagement Center Office (Library 4028). Criteria Eligibility: Length: 1,000 to 1,500 words long Format: All essays should be double-spaced with 12 point font and 1 inch margins. Content: All essays will explore an issue or topic arising from The Devil’s Highway. Contestants are not limited to The Devil’s Highway as the only source; and they are not required to use additional sources. However, all sources must be properly documented using either MLA or APA style. All disciplinary approaches are welcome (e.g. Political Science, Geography, Economics, Environmental Science, Philosophy, History, Ethnic Studies, English, etc.). Essays should be wellorganized, persuasive, and carefully written with a clear purpose. Must be current Sacramento State Student. Submissions are due no later than March 21 at 5 pm and can be turned in, along with the contest form, to either the GE Office (Sacramento Hall 234) or the Community Engagement Center Office (Library 4028).
