START Monthly Meeting DATE: MAY 19, 2011 LOCATION: SACRAMENTO HALL ANNEX TIME START: 2:00 PM TIME END: 3:00 PM ATTENDANCE LOG MEMBERS PRESENT GRAVENBERG CURRY DONATO-WEINSTEIN LOMBARDO SCOTT STIFFLER TANO WHYTE AGENDA SPQI ANALYST 2011 STAFF PEER AWARDS MEMBERS ABSENT OTHERS PRESENT CAROLIPIO CARROLL ACTIONS Sarah Whyte introduced the new SPQI Analyst/Specialist, Andrew Stiffler. Andrew has occupied the position recently vacated by Annette Karle who retired late 2010. Andrew’s background includes a degree in Public Relations, which he earned here at Sac State. As a student, he worked within IRT in multiple positions. His background knowledge and expertise will allow ABA to expand on the goals for its website and other technology related fields. The Staff Peer Awards took place last May 9th and 10th to much success. The event took place over two days to allow more opportunities for staff to attend. 48 nominations were received this year, a new record. Sarah opened the table to suggestions for future award ceremonies. Input was added that all nominees should be notified ahead of time to ensure that they attend. Also, all nominees ought to sit near the front to ensure they arrive on stage quickly. In the future, it was also suggested that all nominees have at least a sentence read by the MC of the event as to why there were nominated. This will allow each nominee to feel a greater sense of appreciation. ABA SPEAKER SERIES A final suggestion, if we continue to split the event over two days, that food/drink be provided to both sessions, or neither. On May 13th, Erick Stille, CEO of Nugget Markets, Inc. spoke to attendees in the return of the ABA Speaker Series. The event received praise from many attendees, included the President, Alexander Gonzales, who was also in attendance. Mr. Stille provided a fun and engaging presentation on office culture, which was held in the Alumni Center. Future Speaker Series events may or may not take place in the same room. The goal is to continue the ABA Speaker Series on a bi-annual basis, one per academic semester. Suggestions were received for possible future speakers, including: CEO of ZipCar Scott Griffith, Java City co-founder Tom Weborg, Chief of Police Rick Brazil and John McGinnis. SPRING SOCIAL AND RECOGNITION OUTLOOK DISTRIBUTION LISTS FOCUS NEWSLETTER ABA WEBSITE REDESIGN Other possible subjects suggested for future ABA events included: the safety/security field, large event planning, recycling/sustainability, and PRSA. Sarah reminded everyone of the Spring Social, taking place on May 24th. Fully catered, this event will coincide with the recognition awards ceremony in which those with 10 and 15 years of service at Sac State will receive pins, while those with 20+ years will receive an award. The Outlook Email Distribution Group List is underway. With approval and coordination with IRT, ABA will soon be able to control their own distribution lists on Outlook. Certain individuals from each unit will be in charge of that unit’s list, while an ALL-ABA list will also be developed. Drafting of the Fall 2011 FOCUS Newsletter is underway, with a goal launch by the end of May. Sarah and Andrew, the main editors, are always taking suggestions on future articles or feature stories. START members discussed possible changes that could be made to the ABA and affiliated websites. Of chief concern is the design and usability of all ABA websites. Timeframes have not been put into place as the new “monet” template design is still under development within IRT. The development of the new monet site will likely coincide with ABA website servers moving to the Web Content Management System, WCM. This will allow for greater ease of change in the future. SUMMER SCHEDULE MEMBERSHIP ROTATION Overall, the goal for changes to the website is to make it a better resource to the public, student, faculty, and staff. START is scheduled to meet next on June 16. The agenda will cover the June 20 Leadership Council meeting and planning for 2011/12, as well as further discussions about ABA website redesign. No meeting scheduled for July. START will reconvene at the end of the summer on August 18. This August 18 meeting marks the end of the 2-year term for Bernie Tano and Julie Carroll. Sarah will discuss continued appointments or replacements with Mike Christensen and Justine Heartt. RECORDED BY: ANDREW STIFFLER 5/19/2011
