Ferial Masry, a Saudi American Woman political activist
speaks on
Muslim Women and Social Change in the US
Ferial Masry, who was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, became the first Saudi American to run
for political office in the United States. In a spectacular 2004 write-in campaign,
unprecedented in California, Masry garnered local, national and international attention for her
outstanding achievement and her unique background. She is recognized as someone who is
trying to break new ground – and break down barriers. She has been an inspiration to people
from all backgrounds as she pursues public office in California. Author of the book Running
for all the Right Reasons, was the Person of the Week, ABC News and received the Human
Rights Award, Ronald Reagan Library (2002). The U.S. State Department called her “SaudiAmerican Woman Champions Democracy” and The Huffington Post in 2010 called her
“Surprised Political Legend” adding: “Ferial Masry would be an arrow rushing through the air
if she were not a person. Her bull's-eye would be a magic button that when pushed, manifests
reinvigorated jobs in a green energy economy with first-class public schools.” She is a teacher
and member of several interfaith organizations.
