Position:
Employability Skills Development Intern
Academic Group/Service
Students’ Union / Careers Service
Reference:
UOB-GI04
Grade:
Grade 2
Status:
Fixed term – 6 months
Hours:
Full-time; 36.25 hours per week
Responsible to:
Student Union Manager / Head of Careers
Background:
The Graduate Internship Scheme provides a fixed-term employment opportunity for students
who have successfully graduated to Degree level from the University of Bolton. This
opportunity is open to UoB graduates who have completed during the academic year
2015/16.
The Scheme is intended for graduates to gain valuable experience of working within a busy
customer facing environment. The University’s intention is to create opportunities across a
number of functions, which will enable graduates from a range of disciplines to gain and
develop transferable skills within the work environment.
The primary contact for the scheme will be the Head of Careers and Employability. The
placement, will however, have an identified line manager within the dedicated Academic
Group/Professional Support Service to which they are assigned.
There will be a relevant period of induction so that the placement is integrated into the
University’s business processes. In particular, certain mandatory training will be put in place
and a mentor allocated, where it is considered appropriate.
The role holder, in conjunction with their line manager, will be expected to continually monitor
and evaluate their progress to be able to demonstrate a transferable skills-set at the
completion of the placement with the University.
The role holder will be expected to have an understanding and awareness of the requirements
in respect to Health and Safety at Work, together with the principles of the legislative Acts
relating to Data Protection, Freedom of Information and Bribery.
Main Function of the Internship:
The aim is to give the role holder an opportunity to encounter a wide range of
internal/external activities that are undertaken on a day to day basis within the University.
This is an opportunity for recent University of Bolton graduates to develop the skills and
experience required for many potential graduate professions.
The role will require interaction with University staff, students, graduates and organisations
external to the institution. The post holder will also need to be able to work outside of normal
hours when required.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
The main function of this internship is to liaise between the Students’ Union, Employers and
the University’s Careers and Employability Service to demonstrate to students what
employers really want to see in graduates.
The intern will build on the student/employer research that has already been started by the
Students’ Union in 2015/16, and based on this feedback in relation to skills development, will
produce a range of interactive materials, aimed at specific academic areas, which showcase
what skills employers are looking for from graduates from those specific academic schools.
You will then work with the SU and Careers and Employability to ensure that students know
the ways to develop key graduate skills. You’ll therefore be ensuring that our students are as
ready for graduate employment as possible.
Other key tasks include:

To extend the student/employer research that was carried out in 2015/16 and to
increase the amount of student and employer responses and engagement.

To raise the profile of employability skills development across the University with
undergraduate and postgraduate students, working together with the Careers
team/SU.

To support the roll-out of relevant career skills workshops showcasing research
findings from the project.
