Tujuan Course objectives: After the lesson, you are expected to be able to: 1) Clarify the basic principles and terminologies underpinning the study of signs. 2) Identify the influence of semiotics towards other disciplines. 3) Use semiotic framework to solve problems encountered in the study of language. 3. Course Description This course will cover the basic concepts of semiotics including the nature of signs, models of signs, the signification process, typology of signs, value of sign, syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations, structural analysis, narratology, codes, metaphors, and intertextuality. You will also learn how semiotic framework can be used in analyzing semiotic phenomenon such as cartoons, advertisement, news, novels, poems, banners, pictures, and so on. You will have a reading list, from which you will be assigned one topic to read and analyze. Then, you will present it to your friends in the class. Finally, you will be required to write a coursework as melting pot of your reading activities in this course. You are kindly encourage to read internet resources. 4.
