The purpose of Physical Education is to create fit individuals, but what does it mean to be physically fit? A person can be fit in many different ways. In fact there are five health components of fitness and six components of skill related fitness. The health components are: Cardio-respiratory fitness- This is a measure of one’s ability to pump oxygenated blood from the heart to the muscles. List three activities that would improve cardio-respiratory fitness. Muscular Endurance- This is the ability to sustain work over a period of time. Give three examples of activities that require muscular endurance. Muscular Strength- This is the ability of a muscle to generate maximum amount of force in a single effort Name one sport that requires muscular strength. Flexibility- This is the range of motion (ROM) of a joint or amount of movement one can do using a specific joint Draw and describe 10 stretches for the body. Make sure to include the name of the muscle is being stretched. Body Composition – This is the ration of adipose tissue (body fat) to fat-free weight (muscles, bones, organs, etc) List two ways that body fat is measured. Which one is more accurate? Why? Skill components include: Power– This is the combination of strength and speed Name 2 activities that use power. Speed– This is the ability to cover distance in a short amount of time Agility– This is the ability to change the body’s position or direction quickly List 2 activities that would improve agility. Coordination– This is when several body parts work together to produce a complex movement or series of complex movements. Reaction Time– This is how fast one’s body reacts physically to stimuli Give 2 examples of life situations where reaction time is important. Balance – there are two types of balance, static and dynamic. Static Balance - The ability to keep a position without moving Dynamic Balance – The ability to keep a position while moving REVIEW After each fitness term, write an H for health-related and S for Skillrelated: 1. Muscular endurance ______ 2. Power ______ 3. Agility ______ 4. Cardiovascular endurance ______ 5. Reaction Time ______ 6. Speed ______ 7. Flexibility ______ 8. Muscular Strength ______ 9. Body composition ______ 10. Balance ______ 11. Coordination ______ Imagine you’re a personal trainer planning a program for a client. Your client desires to be healthy and fit. What type of activity can your client do to improve on the health-related components of fitness? Health–related component Cardiovascular endurance ____________________ Muscular Strength ____________________ Muscular Endurance ____________________ Flexibility ____________________ Body Composition ____________________ Skill-related component Agility ____________________ Speed ____________________ Balance ____________________ Coordination ____________________ Reaction time ____________________ Power ____________________ Choose a sport or activity that uses both health-related components of fitness and skill related components of fitness that will benefit your client the most. In a letter to your client explain how the sport or activity you chose, uses at least three health and three skill components of fitness.
