Course Description: An introductory course designed to acquaint students with the health and physical education profession and allied fields. Students will be introduced to the PHETE major at Longwood and address specific major requirements. 1 credit

Course Objectives :
Knowledge : The subject matter a beginning K-12 physical education teacher needs to conceptually know and understand. Through class discussion and presentations, readings, and assignments contained in the course, the teacher candidate will be able to:
1. Understand the necessary requirements for entering a teacher preparation program, applying for student teaching, obtaining a degree in Kinesiology, and becoming a licensed physical education & health teacher in Virginia.
2. Understand professional organizations and affiliations related to the physical education & health profession.
3. Identify and describe the NASPE/NCATE Standards for Beginning Physical Education
Teachers.
Skills: Demonstrated outcomes of learning essential to a beginning K-12 physical education teacher . As a result of class engagement and the assignments, the teacher candidate will be able to:
1. Develop upon reflection a professional philosophy to guide you as a physical and health educator. (NASPE 5.3)

2. Establish tentative career plans and identify components of personal assessment as it relates to career choice and interest.
3. Evaluate the role of physical education within the context of school and community settings.
4. Plan and participate actively in professional development opportunities. (NASPE 6.2)
5. Gain first hand familiarity through field observations.
Dispositions: Fundamental attitudes, beliefs, and assumptions about teaching and learning in physical education which underlie the professional and ethical bases for practice. As a result of the class discussions, readings, and assignments, the teacher candidate:
1. Is committed to serving as a role model. (NASPE 6.3)
2. Is committed to continuous learning about pedagogical content knowledge and its impact on learning.
3. Is committed to on-going self-reflection, assessment, and learning.
4. Values critical thinking and self-directed learning.
5. Recognizes responsibility for engaging in and supporting appropriate professional practices.
National Standards for Beginning Physical Education Teachers: Beginning Physical
Education Teachers must possess knowledge, skills, and dispositional characteristics necessary to impact student learning in physical education.
Standard 1: Scientific and Theoretical Knowledge - Physical education teacher candidates know and apply discipline-specific scientific and theoretical concepts critical to the development of physically educated individuals.
Standard 2: Skill- and Fitness-Based Competence - Physical education teacher candidates are physically educated individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to demonstrate competent movement performance and health-enhancing fitness as delineated in the NASPE K –
12 Standards.
Standard 3: Planning and Implementation - Physical education teacher candidates plan and implement developmentally appropriate learning experiences aligned with local, state and national standards to address the diverse needs of all students.
Standard 4: Instructional Delivery and Management - Physical education teacher candidates use effective communication and pedagogical skills and strategies to enhance student engagement and learning.
Standard 5: Impact on Student Learning - Physical education teacher candidates use assessments and reflection to foster student learning and inform decisions about instruction.
Standard 6: Professionalism - Physical education teacher candidates demonstrate dispositions that are essential to becoming effective professionals.

* ALL of you need to meet standardized testing requirements this semester in order to be admitted to teacher education in a timely fashion. Failure to be admitted to teacher education on or before January 16 will delay graduation by one year. EVERYONE has met the math requirement. If you have already met standardized testing requirements through over-all SAT scores, then no further testing is needed and the 10 points is automatically awarded. If you need to complete the VCLA, then you must complete it this fall. An “I” will be recorded until the student passes the test or changes majors.

5 points for attending VAHPERD
5 points for each additional afternoon helping with PE x 3
Grading
Final grades will be assigned according to the following scale:
A = 90 – 100
B = 80 – 89
C = 70 – 79
D = 60 – 69
F = 59 and below

Required Tests: To apply to the Teacher Education Program, the candidate must document his/her ability to achieve minimal standards in mathematics, reading, and writing. These scores are set by the Virginia Department of Education and are necessary for admission to all colleges of education within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Students may meet this requirement by:
SAT (combined score of 1100 from verbal and mathematics, with at least 530 on each section) OR
ACT (composite score of at least 24; a math score of at least 22; and a combined
English and reading score of 46) OR
PRAXIS I (Reading test – 178; mathematics – 178; and writing 176). You do NOT have to pass all three PRAXIS I tests if you have a composite score of 532.
There are other ways to meet the standardized testing requirements. The candidate may document his/her mastery of mathematics by
-Achieving a 178 on the mathematics PRAXIS I exam

-OR achieving a 22 in mathematics on the ACT exam
-OR achieving a 530 in mathematics on the SAT exam
The candidate may meet reading and writing requirements by: taking the PRAXIS I and achieving the necessary scores OR by taking the Virginia Communication and Literacy
Assessment (VCLA) and achieving a 235 on reading and 235 on writing. The VCLA test is available through a company called Pearson Vue. It has offices in Lynchburg, Newport News,
Richmond, Roanoke, and Vienna. You sign up through the website: www.vcla.nesinc.com

Once your order is submitted, you will receive a password to view the results of your background check. The results will be available in approximately 48-72 hours. Once your background check is complete, please provide that password and the last four digits of your social security number to the instructor.
Only local phone calls will be returned. Please plan to allow 24 hours to respond to any voice or email messages.
Attendance is expected. The class meets 14 times. Therefore, your grade will be reduced by 6 points for every unexcused absence. University policy – grade lowered by one letter grade for 2 absences and automatic failure for 4 absences.

Newsletter: This class will produce two Newsletters about exercise, health, & wellness that are distributed to 10 counties in Southside Virginia. You will be with a partner. Newsletters are due on 9/7 See BlackBoard for template.

Completed assignments must be word processed. Papers should follow APA format and be grammatically correct using APA style.

Pre-requisites:
English 150 with at least a grade of “C”
Either KINS 175 or KINS 275 or KINS 280 or Health 205 with a minimum grade of C
Obtain a healthy fitness score in PHED 101 for freshmen or KINS 363 for transfer students
Possess an over-all GPA of at least 2.5. Longwood does not round numbers.
Achieve the appropriate scores on standardized tests of SAT or PRAXIS I or ACT and/or
VCLA..
One positive recommendation from a PHETE faculty member. The faculty member completes this on mylongwood. The Program Coordinator will complete one AFTER your interview.
30 credits at Longwood or one full semester at LU for transfer students

The following candidate information must be included in the on-line portfolio/website:
A clear and concise explanation of WHY you wish to become a teacher and WHAT strengths you
could bring to the profession.
A self-evaluation of the candidate’s professional dispositions. This is found in Appendix A of the
PHETE Manual and available on Dr. Colvin’s blackboard site. Grade yourself a 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5.
Also, you should include your weaknesses and methods you plan to implement to improve
them.

A list of experiences you have had working with children and the amount of time spent in each
experience. Describe what was learned about working with children through these experiences.
This entry should not exceed two double-spaced pages.
A list of community service activities in which you have been involved.
One portfolio entry from each course taken in our Department prior to the interview. There are specific requirements for some courses (see Appendix B). If you took a course in this department and it does not have a specific requirement, you should select something you created and include that. If there is no entry from a class, you will write a one-page description of what was learned from that course.
