Portfolio Presentation By: Brian Coleman December 2000 Introduction I would have to classify myself as a non-writer. I believe I don’t have the frame of mind that a writer must have to write. I believe that I have improved my writing skills during this course though. I have enjoyed this class and it showed me what I could write what I couldn’t, and what I need to work on. Changes/Skills Demonstrated The common course syllabus gives us several objectives to follow for this course, and also sets goals to accomplish by the end of the course Learn the methods and techniques of the writing process. Be able to read, summarize, and explain Technique of using information from sources and citing the properly. Changes in my Writing this Semester I have learned to write An effective summary. I know How to cite sources correctly in my writing. I have learned Four ways to organize essays. I know the essential features of a Good thesis statement. I have learned to Express my Writing. I have learned How to write a introduction. A effective summary. A effective summary condenses a work so the whole paper is stated in a smaller statement. Here is a summary of Freedom, according to me. How to cite sources correctly We learned the Modern Language Association (MLA) style. MLA is a brief parenthetical citation in the text, it refers to the works cited page at the end of the paper. (Levetin and McMahon, 296) Levetin, Estelle and Karen McMahon. Plants and Society. York: McGraw-Hill, 1999. 2nd ed. New Four ways to organize essays. Persuasive Compare and Contrast Definition Narration A narration essay, is a story that has a point. I want to organize it so that the events come in chronological order. I also want to explain what happened, when, and where. This will give the reader the feeling he/she was involved. I know the essential features of a good thesis statement A thesis statement is the opener for a paper. It must be a statement from which the essay follows. It also needs to capture the audience’s attention so they keep on reading. In 1937 the U.S. banded the production of industrial hemp, by the Prohibition Act of 1937. The laws governing the production of hemp in the U.S. must be changed. Hemp should be grown in the U.S.. Expressing my Writing Paper/pencil This is a way to express my feeling or thoughts on paper, that everybody can use. PowerPoint Using visuals brings out another aspect of my writing. It also helps the revision process by not have to rewrite drafts. How to write Introductions Use a story A story shows the reader something that they can grip and relate to. Quote/statistics Quotes and statistics is used to grab the readers attention by focusing on the main point. Writing Skill / Levels 1 & 2 Level One: Expresses clearly thoughts and ideas in informal writing contexts. Composes structurally correct sentences in Standard American English. Generates well-developed, coherent paragraphs. Level Two: Processes information to produce writing that clearly and accurately summarizes and/or reports. Writes, well-developed, focused essays. Searches for information and inserts research appropriately. Conclusion I believe I have the strengths of writing correct sentences, coherent paragraphs, inserting information, and summarizing reports. I could always start out well in essays but if I kept them focused they always ended up to short. I could see the ideas in my head but when they came out on paper, it sounded different and didn’t make to much since. Goals for Comp 2 To learn how to extend my ideas on paper.
