Composition 1
Portfolio Presentation
By, Jenna Anderson
December 2000
Introduction


I think that I can describe
myself as a creative
writer. I can think of
many different things to
write about. I like to think
about something that
most people probably
would not think to write
about. It makes my story
more interesting.
Composition one has
made me realize that I
can learn where my
punctuation should go.

conclusion


I have completed the expectations of the writing
skill/ Levels 1 & 2.
I feel that some of my weaknesses include my
shortness of paragraphs. I also think that my
run on sentences are a big problem to. My
strengths include my way to explain things so
people can actually see what I am talking about.
I think that it helps a lot to be able to see what
the writer is talking about. In professional writing
I am hoping to learn in about more ways of
writing.
I have learned to write an
effective summary.



An effective summary is being able to take the
essential information of what the author is
saying and put it in your own words without the
extra information. The example that is listed
below is an excellent example at breaking down
the original paragraph and only writing the
important information.

I know how to cite sources
correctly in my writing.





We learned how to cite sources in MLA style. The
modern Language Assocation is used to let readers
know what the source was and also to credit those that
actually wrote down the information. The following
examples below show how to cite sources correctly
using the MLA style.

I have learned four ways to
organize essays.


Four ways to organize an essay:
Point by point
Sequence of events
Most effective to least effective
Explain a concept
My best essay was the compare and contrast method. I
used the point by point method to organize this paper.
This made it easier to look and one point and then see
what the opposite end of the spectrum would be.

I know the essential features of a
good thesis statement



A thesis statement is the main idea or the
focus of your paper. It states and limits
your purpose. The following example is a
good thesis statement because it tells the
reader what the focus of the paper is
going to be in an interesting way.

Better Introductions



When I started this class my opening statements
were not as good as they are now. Through this
class I have learned that the first paragraph
needs to be an eye opener to make people want
to keep reading what you have written. The
following introduction used examples to catch
the readers attention.

Eliminate the use of Certain
Words


Before I took this class I never really thought
about the words I was using when I wrote my
papers. Since I have been in this class I have
learned that certain words make things more
interesting while others should not even be in
the sentence. One thing I have learned is to
eliminate the word you when at all possible.
