Literature Short Stories Unit (One week lesson plan) Instructor: Anita Fossum Previous Lesson The last 2 weeks, the students have read short stories from Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Poe’s stories included “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Tell-Tale Heart”. They read “Rapaccini’s Daughter” and “Young Goodman Brown” from Hawthorne’s collection. Within these short stories, students were introduced to the elements of short stories including plot, setting, and character development, rising action, climax, and falling action, as well as irony. Students have also previously written a short story, one page in length including a variety of these characteristics. Unit Overview Students will be introduced to a group of short stories this week that show the variety of styles authors have. We will continue to review the elements of the short stories, as well as develop their own short story using the styles of writing from this week’s stories. This will develop the students’ awareness of the varieties and characteristics of short stories, as well as allow them to use their own creativity to develop themselves as writers.
