Paraphrasing Paraphrasing is taking an original document or statement and restating or rewriting it into your own words. ORIGINAL TEXT: The rise of industry, the growth of cities, and the expansion of the population were the three great developments of late nineteenth century American history. As new, larger, steam-powered factories became a feature of the American landscape in the East, they transformed farm hands into industrial laborers, and provided jobs for a rising tide of immigrants. With industry came urbanization the growth of large cities (like Fall River, Massachusetts, where the Bordens lived) which became the centers of production as well as of commerce and trade. PARAPHRASED TEXT: New and larger steam-powered factories were a major beneficiary for the increase of industries and populations. An example of this is in the late nineteenth century, Falls River Massachusetts where the Bordens lived. With industry growing because of larger factories, the need of job market also increased. Now for those who couldn’t make it in the agricultural business, they had other industrial jobs to fall back upon. Job market’s increasing caused a growth in population and soon Falls River became a center for production and trade.
