Background: The ALIVE study has substantial data and specimen which should be made available to the widest possible group of investigators to promote the highest caliber science possible. However, study resources are focused on the conduct of the study itself with increasing demands and budgetary restrictions. Ancillary studies involve a number of costs which individually may be modest but added together can over-tax the study resources. The ALIVE study has developed a general policy for minimal charges applied to ancillary studies for the purposes of cost recovery. Exceptions can be requested, which will be considered on a case by case basis.

The ALIVE PIs and Data Coordinating Center (DCC) will determine if the data set or request is 'simple' and will increase charges for large or complicated data sets or analyses as appropriate.
The following is a guideline for determining request cost categories:
Simple = one visit, <=60 variables (variables outlined with ALIVE variable names); or <30 samples.
Moderate = multiple visits and/or outcome data <=60 variables (variables outlined with ALIVE variable names); or 30-200 samples.
Advanced = multiple visits and/or outcome data > 100 variables; >200 samples, matched samples, and/or blinded QC replicates.
Exceptions can be made (up or down, including higher than the "advanced" level) by the DCC related to the specific request. Conditions to consider are if the DCC has to redo an IRB, create derived variables or do other administrative tasks.
The minimal charge for providing ALIVE data for ancillary studies or meta- analyses is $3,000.The minimal charge for receiving, storing and distributing ALIVE data is $2,000.
