Chan Subject Objectives At the end of the course, students should be able to 1. acquire a basic knowledge about the economic structure of Hong Kong 2. identify Hong Kong as an industrial, trade and financial centre; and to describe the problems faced by HK industries and suggest possible means to tackle them. 3. understand the importance of international trade and hence Hong Kong’s external economic relations. 4. identify the causes and effects of major social issues such as mass media and consumer education and suggest ways to tackle them. 5. acquire an interest in current affairs and be willing to participate in activities for improving community life. Group task: do a survey on the occupation of students’ parents and grandparents and present the analysis in words and graphs. Workbook List out examples of businesses owned by private corporations and government. Compare their pros and cons. With this, students will learn the 4 functions of the Mass media CD-Rom: Broadcasting in Hong Kong – Radio stations and TV stations. Open Forum: There is freedom of speech in Hong Kong. Preparation: Cut down a TV programme schedule on newspaper or magazine. Search information on RTHK (http://www.rthk.org.hk) Compare RTHK with other radio stations. Workbook Picture study: Illustrate the improper use of the mass media Video show on libel (Tape 7) - (10 min) or on Sensational stories (Tape 11) – (24 min) Class discussion: the effects on young people and society. Form groups and compare the headlines of newspaper cuttings on an controversial issue. Comment their objectiveness in news reporting.
