English 1 STAAR Test Periods: 1, 2, and 7 Unit: Cycle 5 1. English 1 STAAR Test What are we learning? Same as Pre-AP. Modifications for Prep: 1. Students will complete SARs in groups. 2. Students will have a mini-lesson to refresh “irony.” Daily Objective: I will be able to understand which details add to the author’s central message or theme, and I will be able to use the details I have chosen to create a thematic statement. TEKS/AP/Standards: ELA.9.8A Explain the controlling idea and specific purposes of an expository text and distinguish the most important from the less important details that support the author’s purpose. How will we learn it? Tuesday Learning Activities: 1. Read aloud: “The Portrait” Complete Inferences Chart 2. Read “When We Arrive” Short Answer Responses on the HUB – irony, self-reflections How will we tell if we’re learning it correctly? Assessment Methods: Students will be taking notes. Checks for Understanding: I will be circulating and checking notes. The responses on the HUB will be checked. What do I need to be successful? Materials: handouts, book, pencil (all provided by me), laptop What do I need to before next class? Follow Up/HW: none Same as Pre-AP What are we learning? Write a Thematic Statement for “Earth”: Partner Work How will we tell if we’re learning it correctly? Assessment Methods: The thematic statement will be graded. Checks for Understanding: Students will be working in pairs and may help each other to complete their thematic statement. I will be available for questions. What do I need to be successful?
