Week of October 6-10, 2014 Teacher: Kindred Team: U.S. History

Weekly Learning Targets

I can describe the economic and political effects of the Spanish-American War and the rise of the

United States into a position of world power.

Using maps and primary/secondary sources, I can explain why the U.S. wanted to expand her influence abroad and how Henry Cabot Lodge, Alfred Thayer Mahan, Sanford B. Dole, and missionaries in Hawaii contributed to this expansionist ideal.

I can compare the Populists and Progressives.

I can review Unit 2 vocabulary and key concepts.

Activities:

1.

Do Now- Define imperialism.

2.

Spanish-American War Review- Students will review their Spanish-American War notes taken from last class.

3.

Imperialism Political Cartoon Analysis- Students will analyze a political cartoon that illustrates the effects of imperialism.

4.

Spanish-American War Timeline- Students will create their own timelines highlighting 6 significant events of the Spanish-American War. *DAILY GRADE*

Do Now- Define yellow journalism.

2.

Cycle 2 Goal Setting- Students will evaluate their success on their cycle 1 goals and set new goals for cycle 2.

3.

Begin Imperialism Stations Activity- In groups, students will rotate to different stations and gather information on various examples of American imperialism, including annexation of

Hawaii and the construction of the Panama Canal. *DAILY GRADE*

Activities:

Do Now- Describe Alfred Thayer Mahan’s views on imperialism.

2.

Complete Imperialism Stations Activity- In groups, students will rotate to different stations and gather information on various examples of American imperialism, including annexation of Hawaii and the construction of the Panama Canal. *DAILY GRADE*

Imperialism Political Cartoon Analysis- Students will analyze 4 political cartoons that illustrate America’s expansionist policies at the turn of the 20 th

century.

Populists and Progressives Review- Students will review the Populists and Progressives to prepare for the upcoming exam.

5.

Populists and Progressives Quiz- Students will complete a 10 question quiz over the Populists and Progressives. *DAILY GRADE*
