Week of: November 10-14, 2014 Weekly Learning Targets Teacher: Kindred Team: APUSH I can describe how regional economic specialization, especially the demands of cultivating southern cotton, shaped settlement patterns and the national and international economy. I can analyze how the economic changes caused by the market revolution had significant effects on migration patterns, gender and family relations, and the distribution of political power. I can describe how various American groups and individuals initiated, championed, and/or resisted the expansion of territory and/or government powers. Monday I can explain why larger numbers of Americans began struggling with how to match democratic political ideals to political institutions and social realities. Activities: 1. Do Now- Explain the impact of Eli Whitney’s cotton gin on the Southern Economy 2. Video Analysis: Southern White Society- Students will analyze a brief video clip that illustrates the divisions in southern white society before the Civil War 3. Cooperative Learning: Cotton, Slavery and the Old South- Students will read an article and answer the following question “How did the continuing dominance of agriculture and the slave system affect southern social, political and economic life?” 4. Document Analysis: John C. Cooperative Learning: Antebellum Reforms- In groups, students will be assigned a specific antebellum reform to research. Then, groups will present their information to the class. 3. Chapter 11/12 Quiz- Students will complete a 15 multiple-choice question quiz over Chapters 11 and 12.
