Chair of Taiwanese Studies
Department of International and Cross-Straight Education, Ministry of Education,
Taiwan, ROC
International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), Leiden, The Netherlands
For the academic year September 2015 – July 2016, we are looking for a
Taiwanese scholar to continue his or her research as a Professorial Fellow at the
IIAS, Leiden, for a period of six months or longer. The candidate shall preferably
be a/an (associate) professor on sabbatical leave from the Republic of China and
shall have minimal qualifications as a Ph.D. holder. The Fellow shall teach a
Taiwanese Studies course and their interaction with Asian Studies as a whole, at
Leiden University. The Department will provide a monthly allowance of 1200
euro’s per month and a round-trip airline ticket (business class). IIAS will provide
housing and health insurance.
IIAS has organized its research into three main clusters, namely Global Asia;
Asian Cities, and Asian Heritages. We are especially looking for candidates whose
research falls within one of these clusters.
Global Asia: Today Asia is reclaiming its historic economic prominence and
asserting its geopolitical influence at a global level. The various nexus of global
interaction engaging Asia with other regions of the world, including Europe, must
be considered within a long-term historical framework.
Asian Cities: Asia is experiencing a process of increasing social concentration
built upon ancient urban traditions, but at a pace never encountered before. This
unprecedented development brings along tremendous transformations framing
new expressions of social, cultural and political modernity.
Asian Heritages: The rapid transformation of Asian societies triggers new forms
and spaces of social agency in the areas of culture and knowledge production.
Culture is the next and most challenged area in the path of Asia’s transformation.
