1. Can you recognize the role of IT in your organization? How critical is IT to sustaining the
enterprise? How critical is IT to growing the enterprise? Do your IT budgets and organizational
structures reinforce an appropriate balance between robust execution and flexible innovation?
2. What strategic initiatives has executive management taken to manage IT’s criticality relative to
maintenance and growth of the enterprise, and are they appropriate?
3. Are your IT investments and performance metrics a good fit with the role that IT plays in your
organization? Do your performance metrics effectively describe and monitor IT’s contribution to
the business?
4. To what degree is the success of your company’s business driven by factors local to geographies
or business units? Conversely, to what extent is success driven by common factors across
geographies and business units? Does the organization of your IT operations fit well with the
nature of your business? The organization of your IT development initiatives?
5. Do you understand the need for data sharing and common applications in your organization?
Are there standards and processes in place to assure efficient data exchange between business
units regardless of the distribution of IT resources now or in the future?
6. How would you recognize the skills and expertise of your IT leader? Is s/he the right person to
lead IT given its current role in the company? Are your IT talent management and personnel
development initiatives consistent with the current and future role of IT?
